Because he wasn't playing like this earlier in the season, its not a hard concept to fathom. Lets not forget he started the season stone cold, 1 point in his first 13 games. He's had an excellent 2nd half of the season, but it doesn't change the fact that his start was awful.

They have the fantasy of Jankowski turning into some Jordan Staal perfect 3rd line center, or drafting Matthews, which would make him obsolete. At least that's what I've seen, but I'm sure every individual has their own reason
