Jarred Tinordi suspended 20 games for PEDs
http://coyotes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=872818
Quote:
The National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jarred Tinordi has been suspended for 20 games, without pay, for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment.
Following today’s announcement by the NHL, Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney issued the following statement:
“Late yesterday afternoon, we were made aware of the situation regarding Jarred Tinordi. The Arizona Coyotes organization fully supports the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. We will also continue to support Jarred throughout this process. We will have no further comment at this time.”
The National Hockey League Players’ Association released the following statement on behalf of Jarred Tinordi:
“I am extremely disappointed that I failed a test under the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. I did not knowingly take a banned substance. I understand, however, that I am responsible for what enters my body as a professional athlete and I accept the suspension. I will work hard towards my return to the ice and will learn from this frustrating setback.”

Guess the Coyotes should ask for Scott back...
4th suspension in the NHL for PEDs since 2006

You know what, I buy his apology. He probably didn't knowingly take a banned substance, but he should have asked and double checked with multiple sources before taking anything.

Gets buried by a crappy coach in Montreal and now busted for PEDs. What a nightmare for this guy. Hope the apology is legit, I've been rooting for this guy.

Meh. This excuse is becoming the cliched answer to failing drug tests and the more it is used, the more you doubt the athletes that use it.

I remember watching a documentary on athletes and PED, and they talked to one pro footballer who had been caught and he bought up that excuse that I didn't willingly know. Then he basically said at an elite level all of these athletes know everything that's going into their bodies and usually its checked and crossed checked by their doctors or nutritionists and trainers etc.
In other words, he stated in 99% of the caught athletes that use that excuse its bs.
To me, Tinordi knew, but pr wise its the only thing that he can say.
And he's not sorry because he used, he's sorry because he got caught.

The stuff that's getting onto the banned substances list is making it harder and harder for athletes to keep up. I totally buy his explanation that he didn't know he was taking a banned substance. Hell, it may have been legal to take until December for all we know.
The same thing happened to Sharapova earlier this week. A medication she had been taking without issue for 10 years was added to the banned drugs list in January and she didn't read the update. As a pro athlete you need to be on top of that kind of stuff but it also shows how finicky these lists are becoming.
I don't know the process within organizations but they should have a person on staff who's sole job it is to look at the lists of supplements and medications players are taking and be checking every single ingredient against the banned substances list. This isn't MLB in the 90's and early 2000's. Not a lot of athletes are risking their careers to knowingly used banned substances in-season (out of season training is another story). Most of the suspensions we will see in all sports from now on will be athletes getting caught taking something they had no idea was on the banned substances list.

You really believe the sob story from Sharapova? Russian doping is institutional.

Yeah I was gonna say. When was the last time an athlete caught doping or failing a drug test admitted they took something for performance enhancement?
Horcoff, Backstrom at the Olympics, Sharapova, now Tinordi. It's always "oh I've always taken this med to prevent diabetes and I just didn't open the e-mail and it became illegal and basically I'm not in the wrong but the drug is banned now so yeah. But it was definitely never used for performance enhancement"

honest question.
What % of the workout supplements sold at the GNC at your neighbourhood mall would be on a athletic board's banned substance list?

How is this only the 4th time since 2006?
If only 10% of players were using PEDs I would be shocked since I believe it's way higher. The drug testing must be a joke.

The league doesn't really care. They just want to catch a few here and there so it looks like they do.

Russia is bad for doping but since she became a huge tennis star she's pretty much been American for all intents and purposes. I think she lives in Florida and an article I read mentioned her main doctor is American.
She could be lying but the fact she was open about this medication being prescribed to her and being no issue for 10 years makes me think she's being honest. Even if she's lying and she did know that it got added in January but kept taking it, that still shows how finicky the doping standards are becoming. It's not like this is a cutting edge steroid that they just discovered a test for. Clara Hughes got dinged for taking ephedrine. That's like the most easily accessible, over the counter sinus medication. I take it all the time when I feel a slight sniffle coming on.
I guess my point is less, "Oh these poor athletes" and more, "Doping standards are getting silly."

A lot. Especially the fat burners and stuff. They will usually have some mild stimulant that really doesn't do much and is probably a waste of your money but is still banned by doping agencies.

While I don't buy her story either, she's about as russian as you or I. She's been living in the US since she was a little kid training.

Concur.
Although I'll occasionally believe an athlete depending on what it was that they got caught with. There is a baseball player I like that got dinged for PED's in the minors and used that line I was skeptical until I learned that it was basically just a decongestant that I myself had been prescribed after a particularly nasty sinus cold.

Except that the drug Sharapova used isn't even approved by the FDA and came from russian or east European doctor.

True.
Interesting that the PED in question is known by multiple names - wondered if this led to her (her medical team) missing it on the update. (They should be better informed though!).

Usually PEDS are taken for recovery, with such a brutal schedule and so few players taking off time for injury out of fear of losing their spot there's likely a significant portion of them taking something for recovery.
Go climb a mountain, get all tired and sore. Do it again tomorrow, and then two days after that and then 79 more times. Probably going to need help whether it's legal or banned.
