It's frustrating but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Wideman slides right back into the lineup and pushes Nakadal/Wotherspoon out. It's same as over-playing Engelland and not trying to see if Kevin/Nakaldal etc can handle more minutes or not.

There's nothing wrong with overprotecting young defensemen. Especially when your top 3 is already Brodie, Gio and Hamilton.
D are better when you cook them like frogs.

Funny how most of us assume Hamilton is in the top 3. Before the deadline and Wideman's suspension, he was #5 in icetime. I suspect he will be #4 in icetime when Wideman comes back and who knows what the offseason will bring. On this team with this coaching staff, he still has yet to earn top 3 status.

The instigator penalty was BS, but the one that really had me scratching my head was the misconduct. He gets 10 minutes because Burns tried to cave his head in? Come on.

Nak didn't play. Wotherspoon, Nak and Kevin are EXACTLY what the bottom pairing need. In time, we can try them all out in expanded roles.
Hartley never throws young/inexperienced players into key situations until they force his hand. He should continue to operate this way. The systems and special teams may not be where we want them, but Hartley is a very good manager of people. He knows what he's doing. Nobody else managed to win a Stanley Cup with Ray Bourque.

Hartley is simply building his ice-time slowly, and trying to get Hamilton to play his (Hartley's) way.
The kid is 22. And I am sure the organization has discussed not simply handing it to him.
The other factor is that they still have (had) vets in the way. Hartley favours vets, and Wideman and Russell were going to get more ice-time than him.
My expectation is that Hamilton moves from 5th to 4th in ice-time next year. And then just keeps growing from there. He will probably move to 1st PP next year as well.
But the Flames clearly seem to want to build him slowly. And that is a good thing, IMO.

The top pair for the next ten years is Dougie/Brodie. This year is developmental.
