Default Bad news for FIFA World Cup in Canada - CBC wants In.

Just read this from Doughboy's 'I don't like Monday's'. Bruce (na nah nah na) says the CBC threw a load of money at FIFA with the hopes of getting the broadcast rights for the next 2 world cups, or up until 2014.

Here's my worries...
-TSN and RSN devoted nearly their entire programming lineups to get all the games on TV, something that was very much enjoyed by football fans in Canada. That means that the two largest sports networks in the country had to join forces to pull what they did. The CBC is one network with a much lower operating budget, and a lower expectation of quality than the big 2 networks.
-Because of the number of games, simple math would tell you that the number of games is simply too great to fit onto one tv channel, unless you put two games on one screen at once(which i wouldn't put past the tech savvy crew over at the CBC...they'd probably play it off as 'a state of the art way of viewing sports! -actually CBC its called picture in picture, its been around for 15 years). Doughboy brings up a similar problem that happened at a past curling championship. the CBC had the rights to all the games throughout the tourney, and had planned on showing some of the them on their outstanding sister station 'country canada' - a station only available to digital subscribers. As most will recall, TSN ended up gaining the rights over the CBC, and the CBC was once agian a national embarressment...

anyways that's it, hopefully TSN and RSN can once agian outbid the CBC for the rights.

Oh, and unless the WC location is changed from south africa to the ACC, don't expect much HDTV.

"What do you mean the Leafs Dont play in the World Cup of Soccer??"

actually you can expect every single game to be in HD. FIFA themselves bought all the cams used in Germany. So its just a matter if CBC will pick up the feed, which they're stupid if they don't since they don't really have to do any of the work for it.

every playoff game in last years playoffs were also available in HD via US networks, CBC didn't pick up the feed. (speaking of edmonton games specificly...the only changing factor is that this is still 4 years away)...the problem i fear is going to be that we simply don't get to watch as many games.

Next World Cup is in South Africa. Won't most of the games be on while we are sleeping?

and hopefully they are as cheap as TSN/Sportsnet were and don't send over announcers so we just get the british ones.

I suspect they are going to provide much expanded coverage with a desk on location at the event and extensive time blocks much like their former olympic coverage. They will probably partner with another station be it country canada or even one of the channels they outbid to cover a few extras but from what I've heard this means alot more attention on the event with more Canadian reporters there and a heightened emphasis on features and breakdowns off the field - it's only going to be good for the sport.

Wonder who is going to be manning the desk - I like Forrest and Paul James, hopefully Lenarduzzi gets nowhere near it.

your faith in the CBC is unmatched. Here's to hoping you're right.

Ya, I don't like soccer that much and I thought it was better having the British announcers that sending ones over their, soccer's not the same without the english accent.

Although its in fashion to pile on the CBC, as has been mentioned, CBC has to do little work, just like Sportsnet/TSN did.

Flick the switch and pick up the host broadcast feed (which we saw this summer) with the British announcers.

The TSN/Sportsnet on location coverage was garbage...at least in past WC's they sent a guy over there to do more indepth/human interest stoirse, and featured it more then the 1 min stories they did this year.

As for channels to air it with, I am sure Sportsnet would be all over it, and much happier then partnering with TSN.

If you recall, Sportsnet, among great fanfare a couple years back, announced that they had secured the rights to all the WC games. A year or so later (I missed exactly why) rival TSN steps in as a partner, with CTV stealing the Final away.

I think CBC would give the on location coverage a little bit more substance and flair, like they do the Olympics usually. The most forgettable coverage in the Olympics was the years (1988 and 1992?) that CTV (who owns TSN, kinda) covered the Wnter Olympics. CBC had the World Cup in 1986 and sent a bunch of people over there IIRC..although Canada itself was in that WC.

They're about the same time zone as Europe. Cape Town is 9 hours ahead of us here in Calgary. I'm planning to be there live!

For anybody who is following this topic CBC has paired with TLN of all stations in their World Cup coverage. Also saw a short ad on CBC already bragging about landing the rights.

It's that telatino channel that you might recognize from showing italian serie a games now and again. It seems likely that they will be carrying the games of Latin American teams and Italy in native languages in partnership with CBC.

Ya that would be disappointing for sure and might warrant a trip to Maxxed for the game in question. Further on the topic of soccer/football coverage I am wondering who has rights for the Toronto FC club in Major League Soccer next season, I'm looking forward to it and am optimistic on full coverage.
