I could definitely see Colborne signing for a lot less than $2m. He's a good third-liner, but not a PK specialist and not good in a top-6 role. Such players are pretty replaceable.

Likewise, I don't see how Jooris has earned a raise.

And it should be possible to bring up those extra forwards for close to league minimum. Not a single player in the Flames' farm system (except Raymond) earns as much as $1m.

On D, if Nakladal wants to come back, he may have to sign for Kulak money – $650,000 or so. I suspect he'd accept that on a one-year, one-way deal.

As for the goalies, I hate to say it, but the Flames will be hard pressed to spend $7m on goalies without seriously overpaying (or giving up major assets in a trade).

If they need a bit more wiggle room, buying out Raymond would push $1m of his cap hit into the following season.

I could see the team picking up an older RW as a short-term fix for around $3m. With so many teams up against a stagnant cap, that might buy a surprisingly good player. Not a true first-liner by any means, but a 20-goal guy with some size who could complement Gaudreau and Monahan for a year or two.

Yeah Colborne maybe only gets $1.5 but he's been looking good lately.
Jooris may not deserve a raise but his qualifying offer needs to be 105%.
Maybe Nakladal will sign for less or Wotherspoon so in total we'd maybe save a Mil but it isn't looking like we can sign a big UFA RW. A lot may depend on Smid's status and can we dump Wideman.

There aren't many UFA's who fit that description: if you're talking about a 20-goal scorer right-now that's pretty much Doan and Jagr.

If you stretch it to include guys who have ever scored 20 goals: Vrbata, Purcell, Jones, Brouwer, Grabner, Parentau, Stempniak, and Boyes get added to the list. Out of that list, to me Brouwer and Parentau are the only two who look at all interesting. Though Purcell does have really good fancy-stats. However I don't think any of those three are the answer for that 1st-line right wing, which I see being either solved by a draft pick this year, or being something of a revolving door until someone is developed from within.

The irony of the Calgary Flames being on the hunt for a 1st line right winger...

Colborne will likely be looking at a similar contract to what Bouma got.

Id keep colborne over bouma every time if given the chance. If they can't keep colborne, I can see him as part of a bigger trade.

Contracts aside, I prefer Colborne to Bouma. Factoring in the contracts, it's not even close.

Completely agree. Colborne provides so much more than Bouma at a lesser cost. I'd re-sign Colborne and dump Bouma in a heartbeat. If you can't get Colborne at a friendly contract he should be good value add-in a deal in a hockey trade.

Would anyone do a Colborne for Beau Bennett swap?

Does Colborne kill penalties? I didn't think he did.

Yeah, Colborne will unfortunately try to use Bouma's contract, where he got slightly overpaid, and do the same. I think the Flames should do a 1 yr/ 1.5m or a 2 yr/ 1.8m deal. If he doesn't accept look for a trading partner.

I wouldn't swap Colborne for him. I'd do a guy like Jooris instead. I think Colborne if traded can net you a 2nd-3rd rounder. Rutherford loves making dumb moves so he might just do it.

Bennett can't stay healthy. I would take a flyer on him though.

Why not offer a decent RFA like Ryan Strome $3.6 Million? The compensation is only a second rounder at that price.

Sure the NYI can match, but there'd be nothing to lose. I don't understand why this isn't done more often.

You just answered your own question. Not only is it a fruitless endeavour, but it pisses off the GM on the other end. There's just no point.

Why don't the islanders sign Monahan to a $7M offer sheet for 4 years that takes him up to UFA at 25? I think teams avoid doing that stuff because all it really helps is the player and not the franchise. GM's do offer sheets when they think there is a chance a player will be cut loose not to screw with their fellow GM's. All offer sheets do is drive up the price for RFA's

The compensation for a $7 Million contract is quite a bit more. $3.6 Million is an inflection point in which the compensation goes from being practically insignificant, to considerable.

RFA offers do drive up the cost of players, but this is a good thing since the Islanders are a budget team with an abundance of talent. It is a shame what Tavares and Hamonic are getting paid. It allows the NYI to have a higher concentration of good young players.

Also, a guy like Monahan is likely not that interested in signing an offer sheet because he's got a good thing in Calgary playing on the first line. Conversely, Strome would probably be very interested in going to another team, because on the NYI, he is buried behing some pretty well paid players on the right side.

Lastly, it's better to drive up the price of good RFA's, than fill out your roster by spending stupidly on UFA's like Raymond, Wideman and Engelland.

My point is if Monahan got a 4 year $28M offer sheet he likely signs it and the Flsmes almost certainly match. He gets paid top $ and gets to be a UFA at 25 which gives him the best chance to cash in.
Flamea sign Strome to a $3.6M citizen tract that gets matched and pisses Snow off. So perhaps he doesn't sign Monahan to an offer sheet but lines one up for Sam Bennett next year.

Like I said a GM does an offer sheet if they think they can actually get the player they sign or it is a desperate move by a bad GM (Feaster). Offer sheets would be used if they worked but they never do. Basically if a team knows they can't sign a player they will do what Boston did and trade Hamilton for picks instead of getting handcuffed by an opposing team.

I also don't mind the right players getting paid on their second contract but offer sheets can get the wrong players paid way too much and further push the guys like Glencross out of the league.

Why didn't the flames sign tarasenko to 3.6 mil offer sheet? Lol

First off, the player would have to sign the sheet to begin with. For that money.
The player would have to want to come there and agree to that money. Not every offer sheet presented gets signed by the player.

Another thing is that the flames will likely have interest in hamonic and giving someone in the isles and offer sheet would screw up any future trades with that team.

Just not worth it.
