I just think the culture is worth allot more than a 6th. Building a franchise that makes good deals, tries to win games, and just generally doesn't do the things Oilers do.

How about the culture of being a team that helps out a player by moving him at the deadline when he has requested a trade? It's pretty obvious from his interview that Jones wanted to be moved to a playoff contender and Treliving helped accommodate that.
That's the sort of thing that boosts your reputation around the league. Having a reputation for treating your players well can pay off well even if one single trade doesn't.

My guess is that Backstrom plays vs. Minney and calls it a career.

You know, I never once doubted your collective passion for the Flames or hockey in general, but this thread demonstrates it without a doubt. 20 pages on this. Seriously, that's remarkable.
As a Wild fan, I wish Backy well. He was a rock for us for several years when we didn't have the offense to not have to rely on our goalie arguably more than is reasonable. Backy was always a positional goalie. Sort of the anti-Hasek. If his angles and his positioning were on, he could gobble up rebounds, and it seemed it was in the proper position to make the save before the shot was even taken. Once the rebounds started popping out, or the puck was hitting him on the skate, or the cheater, or some place other than the crest, that meant he was off on his positioning that night and it would be an adventure.
He has had several injuries the past few seasons and, when he did play, he was simply not as good anymore. Sort of what we're living through with Pominville now. Maybe that was the cumulative effect of the injuries/recovery. I don't know. But he has been a not good goalie for a couple seasons now.
I never blame the player for the contract. If the team offers the deal, it's on the team, not the player for signing it. At the time of his current deal, it wasn't as big a potential risk as it is now. Remember, Harding hadn't really grabbed the reigns as a starter, and then he was diagnosed with MS in 2012. Backy was extended in 2013. I can't fault Fletcher on that. Even giving him the NMC. In a vacuum that made sense (you COULD argue that, with the "backup" having MS, Backy had a virtual NMC as long as he played well, but.....). The issue for the Wild is that EVERYONE gets a NMC, if you're older than 25, it seems. So, outside of the vacuum, in the real world, Chuck has hog tied himself - and that is a part of the Wild's problems for sure. But, back to Backy, whether he deliberately hid it or not, the perception is that he withheld his injury at the end of last season until he wouldn't have been healthy in time for the Wild to buy him out. Again, I'm not saying he and Grossman did that intentionally, but....
I don't know what you can expect from Backy in games. He got a full game in the preseason, and had a shutout. But he hasn't had a sniff all season, and really the entire second half of last season. If he plays to the level he was playing at the last time he was healthy, he's more or less worthless. If all the rest he's gotten the past year helps him find the fountain of youth, then he can be effective.
By the looks of this thread, I guess I shouldn't expect much from Jones. Maybe that means I end up pleasantly surprised, but it definitely means I won't be disappointed.

Frankly I'm pretty embarrassed by the number of Flames fans that are musing about the benefits of tanking. Have we not learned anything from laughing at that gong show up north for the last 7 years. It's not about the number of picks or how high they are. Its about scouting well, developing players properly, being honest and fair with your players and making smart business decisions.

How was this not a a good deal? Jones by himself has little to no value. As mentioned by other posters, the two teams pretty much swapped two anchor contracts and Flames get a 6th for giving up a warm body in the line up. Flames free up a spot for their forward line, and the Wild get some depth for the playoffs. It's win win for both sides.

also a fun game is to count the number of times Bax says "for sure" in interviews. His normal hit rate is around 1 per 15 seconds of speaking time.

So what now? If Backstrom makes the Flames line up, then who gets sent down, Ortio or Hiller? Or keep all 3?

Ortio is on an Emergency recall, so he'd have to be sent down if/when Backstrom is activated.

Or they have the option of converting it and burning one of their non-emergency recalls.
My gut tells me they'll do that. Then they will lock Hiller in a small room, wearing full goalie equipment. (Don't worry, he'll have food and ventilation.) The keys to the lock are taped to hockey pucks which are then fired in his direction at random intervals. As soon as he actually stops a puck, he can retrieve the key, get out of the room, and be back on the team.
It is expected to take him 27.6 days of trying before he gets a key. This number has been verified by SCIENCE!!!

Backstrom is not on IR as far as I can see. Meaning they must have used a regular call up on Ortio since Deadline day. I'm looking at general fanager for my resource. TSN only has Ramo and Smid on IR as well so. Im thinking the Flames only have 2 call ups left.
EDIT: yup even the Flames website does not have Backstrom asterixed as on IR.

I'm kind of intrigued by this whole thing. Can't hurt, and maybe what the team needs is some grizzly veteran back there with a proven record that can calm things down from the back end a bit.

Jones, when healthy and motivated, is a very serviceable 3rd line winger. And he was one of the Flames' best wingers in the playoffs last year.
I am sure Minny fans will get a lot more from him than a 6th round pick would imply.

He can pinch hit on the 2nd line too. He has a pretty good shot and has size. Will stand up for teammates. I think Minny will be happy with him if they go on a playoff run.
