Pens massively overpaid for a guy who will likely be in Europe by the time the NHL starts its centennial season.

This will be an interesting project for the pens. Will be pretty telling if the pens can "fix" him.
What gets me is they haven't much time to fix him until they need to offer him a contract worth more than he deserves or they lose his rights. Just dumb.

Justin Schultz will play more games in a Penguin uniform than whatever the average 3rd round pick plays, assuming he's re-signed for next year.

$4 Million per year on Schultz is definitely more than he deserves.

Under Nelson he seemed to get his offensive game back, but still was terrible defensively. Having watched a few seasons of him his issues are not going to be fixed in 20 games. He has little strength and even less compete outside of the odd game here and there, and neither of those are new. His lack of ability to do the small things that win games has never developed despite his recognition of all those things and that this was a big year for him (pre-season interviews). He'll get some time and maybe look good offensively giving the puck to Pittsburgh's forwards but he's a bottom end PP guy who didn't even excel at that role.

Not surprising from someone who took the shortcut route to the NHL by signing with the Oilers. Have to wonder where he'd be now if he signed with the Ducks or any other competent team that wasn't promising him a top 4 role immediately.

Any time a guy's production peaks in his rookie year, you know he didn't reach his potential.
That's fine and all, but you initially said he was a player who was damaged goods who never recovered. He did just that, and with some adjustments, has become a solid guy on one of the better teams in the league. Perhaps he hasn't attained the point totals some had optimistically hoped for, but he did have his best goal-scoring year after the trade, and overall still has the 10th highest points total out of his draft class (and was drafted 25th).

If the Pens can get that type of recovery out of Shultz, they can consider it a good trade.

The TSN Reporter guys on TradeCentre today ripped into Schultz.

Simmons said "Schultz was the worst player in the NHL this season. There was two places to put him. One was the press box and two was the AHL...he might work out two or three years down the road but he won't work out now."

This trade remains baffling from Pittsburgh's perspective.

Can Schultz develop into a servicable NHLer? Sure, maybe.

But not in 20 games. He has to be qualified at roughly $4M or he becomes a UFA. No way in hell the Pens do that.

Which means they gave up a 3rd for the chance that he miraculously becomes a player by spring. Good luck with that.

Must be a nice change of pace. In Edmonton its not the clothes they hang out to dry but the player.

Should have just hid his clothes in the defensive zone.

But then he would just spend the day walking around the arena naked...

Good points! I am assuming that this makes the Penguins the least likely to sign him in the summer, since he has to get qualified at $4 million. Meaning that the Oilers are now more likely to sign him than the team that just gave up a 3rd round pick!

Maybe the Oilers think that the Pens will teach him how to play NHL hockey in the next few months, meaning a "Marquee UFA NHL defenseman" is coming to Greaserville on July 1! Think that's crazy? I have two exhibits; Devyn Dubnyk and, more importantly, Jeff Petrie, who were able to be un-oilered and went on to sign long term contracts for big bucks.

I imagine they will qualify him given they invested a 3rd round pick for him.

I will bet he signs a two year one way for around 4M, if the penguins decide they like what they see. Even Schultz must realize that his value on the open market is incredibly low, and at 4M one season, Pittsburg walks.

4 million for Schultz? Rutherford should be fired on the spot if he does that. He shouldn't get anything over a mill 2 way deal. He's terrible, sure he has room to grow but paying him 4 mill is foolish.

According to General Fanager, the Penguins have $70.6 million in cap hit for 17 NHL players next season. If the cap stagnates as expected, it will be impossible for them to offer Schultz $4 million without shipping bodies out.

If they don't qualify him, he becomes an UFA, right?

Can't they just let him go and then re-sign him as a free agent for less than $4m?

Iirc, Flames did that with Byron.
