Makes two of us. No reason..... He had a good ten game stretch last year and is nothing special. Time to move on IMO

I can't believe that some people want Ortio or Ramo back. The only good thing about the goaltending situation right now is that they are all on expiring deals.
Lots of options out there. Not so much if the Flames bring back any of these scrubs though.

Agree completely. The only goaltender I want back that played pro this season is Gillies. I would like to see 3 new goalies signed for next year. Although if Poulin is willing to be the 1B in Stockton I would be alright with him returning; but I think he wants to be a clear cut #1 guy with a chance at a recall.

I don't think it is so much that people "want" Ortio back as it is they would prefer that the Flames hold onto him while they still have his rights. It makes much more sense to give Ortio his RFA offer, and then to move him as part of a package for another goaltender. What makes little sense is to just let him walk. He is still only 24-years-old, and has some time yet for development.
Based on an insider report in this thread, it does sound as though Ortio is not in the Flames' plans moving forward. With that in mind, I am still hopeful that they don't just let him go—at least not without exploring all their options.

So what has happened with Ortio? 6 years of development from a 6th round pick to an AHL all-star and flashes of brilliance in limited NHL action. Trending in the right direction with an NHL job ready for the taking. Then this year -- off a cliff to start the year and seemingly out the door at the end of the season. If Ortio doesn't fit into the overall plans and walks at the end of the season, that will be a significant black mark on the Flames and their development framework. Treliving, Hartley and Sigalet need to do better -- especially Sigalet. if he cant do it let's find someone else who can.

Ortio is only 24-years-old, which is still quite young for a NHL goalie. I don't know that anything has gone disastrously wrong, I tend to think rather that he has hit a snag in his development. He still has a fair bit of time to find NHL success.
As for Sigalet and the Flames, this is a 6th round pick we are talking about. For him to have played as many games as he has in the NHL already is arguably a pretty good sign of successful development. It does not sound like he is in the Flames' plans moving forward, and if this is indeed the case, then I would expect it is because the coaches are not convinced about his long-term potential. In other words, like well over 90% of sixth-round draft picks, this is yet another player on whom the team took a low-risk chance that didn't pan out. If he is not good enough, then there really isn't anything anyone could have done to change that.

I don't get the love for Ortio. His career stats are not very good in any league, he's just not a number one and that's what we need. Pinning hopes on Ortio is a lost cause imo, he's never getting there.

I think it's a matter of there only being a handful of truly elite goalies. The rest are a product of their system and can be VERY streaky. Teams like DET, SJ, STL, MIN and ANA have all seen constant turnover yet remain top teams year after year. Very few teams have had the same guy in place for a significant period of time. Guys like Price, Kipper and Lundqvist are rare.

|
Please explain why it would be "dumb" to qualify Ortio as an RFA. Unless this contributes to an excess of contracts for the Flames, I don't see how it would be smart to just let a 24-year-old developing goalie walk away from the organisation.

BT had an opportunity at this trading deadline to address this and he didn’t. (and for those that say no deal was out there – give me a break, Hutchinson for a pick make it happen)...

Was there a deal to be made for Hutchison at the deadline? If so, this is the first I have heard of it. As good a GM as Treliving may be, even he is not capable of just "making things happen."

And now we’re considering off-season options because there’s still no plan?

Why would you conclude that there is no plan?

Not sure what Ortio's options are going to be in the offseason. If the Flames keep him in the fold he's likely destined for Stockton to back up Gillies. That's something he probably wants no part of and maybe it's possible he gets claimed off waivers or maybe he packs his bags and heads home. It's possible if there's a coaching change he may stand a better chance to compete for a backup spot but I think Hartley will get one more chance with different goaltending options.

1. Ortio is terrible. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=120919
2. Pavelec is not tradeable, Hellebuyck can't stay down, therefore Hutchinson. Michael Hutchinson or Ondrej Pavelec
3. And between BT not mentioning goaltending as a need last HNIC, or Burke saying post-deadline that they will address it in the off-season, there is no immediate plan here. These guys must love a tanking team...

The Flames will have better opportunity to address the tending in the off season. Why do it at the deadline when there are fewer options?
