Probably even slightly higher than that. It's hard to calculate since the odds change quite a bit based on who wins the 1st pick.

At 29th, the worst we could get is # 5.

Site considers Flames in 3rd because of point percentage. Of course the Flames would have to win another game to pass the Oilers so that's debatable.

I honestly think that if the Flames draft Matthews they move Bennett back to the wing. Matthews or even Bennett would be wasted in a 3L role.
If they draft Laine or Puljujarvi, they would likely slot in as the 2L RW with a quick upgrade to the 1L at the first opportunity.
That all being said, we should all get more comfortable with the idea of Nylander being on this team. Just saying.

At worst the most any team can move is back 3 spots.

Austin Matthews would not slot in as 3rd line C. I think he's already better than that.
He's a ready-made top 6 player, with potential to be top line player as the season progresses. IMO, the biggest can't miss prospect in the last 5 years aside from McDavid

Huh? At this point it looks very unlikely we'll be drafting lower than 5th. It can happen but its unlikely. I'd be freakin shocked if they took Nylander top 5. I'm guessing he's more in the 6-10 range on our list.

Or Chychrun. A top 4 of Brodie, Hamilton, Giordano and Chychrun would be fantastic long-term and a nice consolation prize if they don't get a top 3 pick. Could then use a couple D prospects as trade bait to get a top 6 winger.

Maybe his secret desire is to play only for the Coyotes.

That's fair. I guess what I'm saying is that we shouldn't pin our hopes on one of the top 3.

Agreed. Personally I'd be pretty excited to land Chychrun or Tkachuk. Dubois is my favourite for #6 at the moment.

I think it's fair to pin our hopes to something, given how much of a mess this season has been.
It's top 3 pick or bust for me.

If the Flames draft 4th/5th/6th, then they will likely take one of Dubois/Chychrun/Tkachuk, all of whom are great prospects in their own right. Not a huge deal if we're not picking 1/2/3 although it would be a disappointment.

If Matthews is as good as Eichel then I think he and Bennett are neck and neck for the #2C spot next season. Monahan will be the #1C for at least 1 more season because of his numbers and experience.
Eichel is a 0.65 PPG player.
Bennett is a 0.5 PPG player right now and will certainly be better next year. I think 0.65 PPG is realistic. Compound that to his full NHL experience and I think it's a toss-up between him and Matthews.

Well, I wasn't even aware how much the odds dropped past 30th place. This will likely be the lowest the Flames have ever finished in Franchise history and it's the first year it doesn't hugely benefit them to do so.
It's a damn good thing this rule is going to hurt the Oilers as well this season or I'd of felt really ripped off with this rule change.
Wish they would of gone with something like can't pick top-3 two years in a row instead..

Matthews is mature and likely to have a very good season right away.
Laine and Puljujärvi are significantly younger. You'd give them the opportunity but can't be certain they'll have an impact right away. Depends on how much they develop in the next six months.
Right now Laine might need more explosiveness to fully play his game in the NHL but it's pretty close and hard to predict since by the time the season starts he's going to be stronger than now. Easy to imagine both of the Finns scoring on the PP but there is probably going to be an adjustment period, maybe more so for Laine because there's more finesse to his style.
I can imagine Puljujärvi happily skating around even if offense doesn't happen right away. Laine might be a player who needs to click offensively before he feels completely comfortable. Totally guessing here of course.

I'm so sad we're having this conversation instead of potential playoff matchups :'(
The Flames have sucked from 1995 to 2003, then from 2006 to 2013. Shouldn't we be good by now?!

To be fair the Flames were pretty good in 2006-2009. But yeah, its disheartening to spend more time on this topic than playoffs.

In that entire time we only draft top 5 once (2014). That's usually where you get the biggest impact players.
