Not according to the NHL.com article I just read. Players have to be at least 24 by October 1st.
Why would they do this? Anyone have a clue?

I'm not sure what your question is.
Why is there an under 23 team in the first place? Probably to promote the elite young talent in the NHL.
Why is the under 23 team North America only? So as not to deplete the European teams too much as their talent pool is smaller.
Sure it's a gimmick, but I actually really like it. It's not an Olympic level tournament obviously, so why not have fun? We also get a best of 3 for the finals which I think is great since single-elimination championships are disappointing to me.

I see Oilers fans are a little salty that Hall wasn't named to the initial roster. He may have a shot of making the team but I suspect Canada brass is looking for players with high hockey IQ to go along with skill so it could be a tough call.

How in the fricken hell did Oiler fans think that Hall was good enough to be named to the 16 man preliminary roster?
Anyone who thought that needs to pull head from arse.

I am.
I'm all about Team Canada during the Olympics, but I see this tournament as an extra opportunity to see some exciting, top-shelf hockey. I also see the U23 team as a huge wildcard, and that's interesting to me. It's not impossible for them to win in my opinion, and I really think they're going to play to prove something.
The NHL is tops for me, but anything-can-happen hockey featuring the best players in the world in configurations that we don't even get to see at the Olympics is hugely intriguing. My hype level for the World Cup is really high.
It's like the World Juniors: it's something different, some unexpected stuff is going to happen, and I don't really care that much if my team doesn't win.

Yeah but wouldn't we all agree a best on best tournament regardless of age would be better?
Can't they make the young stars tournament another season? Maybe have that every 2 years and this every 4?

It's not Olympic level because Switzerland and Latvia won't be icing teams? The best players in the world will all be there. Personally, I saw no difference in quality of play between the Canada/World Cups and the Olympics. In fact, I'd say the overall standard of play was better in the former because there weren't a bunch of hopelessly outclassed teams.
The problem with this tournament is the NHL for some reason felt the need to have an 8-team tournament. Going with the traditional 6-team tournament of the World Cup would have been fine, and wouldn't have required two gimmick teams.
But once they hit the ice, these guys will all pay just as hard as they did at the Olympics.

I don't think that would be better, I think the concept they have is pretty cool and interesting.
In fact I think I'm more interested because of the U-23 team, not less interested. I will likely be cheering on Johnny and Monny.

This may be a stupid question, but since the NA team is allowing players aged 23 and under as of a certain date, shouldn't they technically be called Under 24's?
How does that kind Of U- nomenclature usually work?
The WJC is considered U-20 is it not?, and 20 year old are not allowed?
Just curious.

This doesnt bode well for 17/18. Likely another decade of terrible jerseys. Canada looks particularly awful. The four standard european countries are alright.

I meant it was the case that someone who didn't make Team NA could be chosen for Canada or the US (though I agree that's not gonna happen).

Those Canadian jerseys are so beyond tacky. What the hell was adidas thinking?
The others are alright though.

So who wore it better:
North America U23 Team
Or the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich"?

That's not correct. Players could only be named to Team Canada or USA if they were born before October 1, 1992.
Team NA doesn't get first dibs on the younger guys, they get the only dibs.

Looks like a baseball logo with those colours and font. Make the triangle a diamond and it would be 100%.
