Would you rather have Ortio + Backstrom or Enroth + Raanta?
Assuming they make no trades, which is doubtful.

I'd Rather have a myriad of other goalies. Doesn't mean the organization is planning that way. Backstrom might be what many think he is, a cap swap leaning into retirement. But then again if the plan is to push Ortio's development further, then Backstrom/Ortio might be the way they go.
We will see.

Can someone clarify a question I have concerning call ups? I have read here that the Flames are at the bare minimum in regards to forwards and defencemen, to allow them to call up players in case anyone gets hurt without using one of the 4 non emergency call ups. I believe Hathaway was called up after the trade deadline so wouldn't he be considered an emergency call up since without him the Flames would be unable to ice a full roster?
I keep reading in this thread that he has taken up one of the four call ups but I don't understand why because without him the Flames would only have 11 forwards.
Am I misunderstanding the situation here?

Could Backstrom be assigned to Stockton for a conditioning stint? It certainly would be a reasonable action.

|
I get the idea that Malarchuk is not available for personal reasons. But I actually have a certain amount of confidence in Jordan Sigalet. He managed to fix the glaring flaws in Ramo's game and turn him into a reasonably average starter over the course of this season. It isn't the goalie coach's fault that Hiller is washed up, or that Ortio has been wildly inconsistent.

Good question - and my best answer is 'it depends'.
How mcuh is Enroth and Raanta going to cost the Flames? I don't see either as being an answer long-term in the organization, but how much is it going to be to sign either one? How much term are they going to demand?
I don't mind the Flames playing Backstrom. I mean, I think they should start him at Minnesota, as that would be the classy thing to do. I don't mind if he gets in half the games with Ortio getting the other half, as it is a good way to audition him for a stop-gap. If he is terrible, you have your answer. If he does well, then I wouldn't mind signing him for a 1 year, lower dollar contract as a stop-gap IF the Flames are unable to find someone better.
If the Flames can't find someone suitable longer-term (at least 2-3 year until Gillies is pushing that goalie out), then a stop-gap will have to do until they can find someone or until someone else actually steps up within the organization.

You can't trade yourself into an Emergency situation.
When a player is on an Emergency Recall, you have to inform the League which unavailable roster player he is replacing. After trading away Granlund, Hudler, and Jones, the Flames only had 11 healthy forwards in Calgary, and no injured forwards, so there was no one for whom Hathaway could be designated as an Emergency replacement.

Yup, Trelving explained it on the FAN. Said there has to be an injury for an emergency recall, and since the Flames didn't have any up front and created the 11 forwards situation themselves by trading Jones, it had to be one of the 4 regular recalls.

He has a no movement clause, so he would have to agree to it.

Backstrom is a contract dump. They aren't going to keep him around after this year. The Flames will have two new goaltenders come next season and I wouldn't be shocked is one of them is a former Leaf.

I'm starting to agree with the minority around here...if the flames had Jones last night, they would have won so convincingly that the league would have awarded them 50'points and they'd make the playoffs! Picks are garbage!!!!!

For his unselfish act of friendship... 50 points to David Jones and the Calgary Flames.

I think you guys completely miss the point.
Jones for a 6th nothing special about that return, but I guess that's believable.
Taking on a teams crap contract just so you can help make another team better, pushes it over the edge, it was a bad deal.
I just think the culture is worth allot more than a 6th. Building a franchise that makes good deals, tries to win games, and just generally doesn't do the things Oilers do.
Frankly I'm pretty embarrassed by the number of Flames fans that are musing about the benefits of tanking. Have we not learned anything from laughing at that gong show up north for the last 7 years. It's not about the number of picks or how high they are. Its about scouting well, developing players properly, being honest and fair with your players and making smart business decisions.

Fine. But that wasn't what they did. They took on the crap contract so that the trade would be possible. It was a salary cap move.
Dollars going in equalled dollars going out, and the Flames got a pick for a player that they were not going to re-sign and had no particular use for this season. Show me what they lost, and I'll agree it was a bad deal. But they lost nothing at all.

I can see why Jones was so happy to leave. He's playing for his career right now.
he needs a high profile playoff run with some good games or else I think his NHL career is in jeopardy.
I hope he does well.

This. They get one more swing at the bat on draft day and clear a spot to play a deserving youngster ala Hathaway. The cap swap shows management and ownership are committed to growing the team. Great move.

Yup he looks to be in a Glencross situation right now.
Not a great year so far and his performance with Minnesota down the stretch might determine if he gets another contract offer at all. I would think he finds a home regardless, but I thought Glencross would have no problem either.

I agree, we took their crap...but they took ours too! It was a bad player for bad player deal but they'll be able to play Jones and they couldn't play backstrom. The flames get a 6th and get rid of a guy who didn't want to be here.
Player going=crap
New player=crap
6th rounder=crap
We got the most crap, we win!

I haven't followed this whole thread so I apologize if these points have been made already.
David Jones's salary is still more than Backstrom's, so the Flames still actually saved money on the deal. Not sure what the complaint could possibly be about that.
Furthermore, it was very clear that David Jones was not in the Flames plans. There had been no contract talks. You really think that a 30 something UFA with no chance of re-signing is going to make a difference in culture on a team near the bottom of the standings? By that reasoning, who's to say Backstrom doesn't come in and provide a breath of fresh air as a different voice in the room, especially to Ortio?
