Did a shop actually diagnose the ball joints or did you comment about getting shimmy in the front end and they right away went to ball joints?

The list you posted is going to be about a $4000 haircut on whatever you list it for, even worse hit at a dealer.

Is it manual or auto? 4 door/2 door?

Wife drives a 2010 Kia Optima. She loves the thing and it's never had a single problem.

Not exactly a Hyundai, but really.... a Hyundai.

If you're set on something like a Tuscon, but want to be a little cooler, I'd talk to pylon about a VW Tiguan, then immediately go to Concept1 or Tunedub for a APR or Unitronic tune.

Two diagnosis both the same I didn't tell them about the shimmy, because it didn't really come up I've had a couple of shimmies but that's about it.

Its 6 speed Manual 2 door with hard and soft top. The only real change from stock is I put in a Panasonic deck with bluetooth and handsfree.



Yeah the ride doesn't define you as much as you get older. I'm looking at some other vehicles as well. I kind of want to keep the spending reasonable as well with the economy like it is.

I don't give a crap what my car projects to others, I care about it enjoyment level and how it makes me feel. Considering he has a Wrangler, a car with a very passionate ownership group, I'd like to think the Captain cares too.

Hyundais are "value buys" for people who don't give a crap about cars (which admittedly is a lot of people these days!). Perfectly acceptable transportation machines, but with the personality of a potato.

I have an '08 Nissan Pathfinder. That thing has about 250000 km's on it and just won't die. I replaced the tires last year, and changed out the brakes myself for a few hundred dollars. Only thing I'm holding off on fixing is my alignment is a bit off and that's because of some worn parts that aren't worth fixing. Although I can't see anything going wrong with this car - still driving really good. Just terrible on gas... about on par with a full sized truck. But she sure is reliable.

That's the beauty of Wranglers, though, you can replace the entire suspension for less than $2000 and have something completely bulletproof that's light years ahead of stock performance - aftermarket support for Jeeps is insane. When stock parts fail, upgrade them and at the end of the year you'll be way ahead vs new car payments.

Personally...Hyundai's have improved more than any other company and are a good choice but I think resale (if that matters) would be poor.

I would look at Acura's and Lexus' with less than 100k on the odometer. The quality is so high that it's like 50k on another import.

An MDX, RDX, GX or RX are all great SUV's and I wager if you shop around and find a deal on a used one the depreciation (and maintenance) would be quite appealing. Plus every component is quality.

I have never owned a Hyundai, but for imports my wife has a Mazda 3 and I have nothing but good things to say about that car. 2009, so same year as yours, and we have yet to fix anything *knock on wood* outside of regular maintenance (brake pads, rotors, oil change, tires etc..). She wants to upgrade soon so I will be looking at their SUV's after the performance of this car.

I know Hyundais are a step cheaper I think, or at least they were the last time I was car shopping. So that is something to consider also.

I have a 2014 versa note sl i am looking to get rid of. It has 48800 km. In great shape, no mechanical issues. Let me know if you want more information.

Best advice I got when I was buying a car was: "Just buy a Toyota (Lexus), cheap to insure, cheap to maintain, everybody love's their Toyota." I love that the engine on my Matrix has been described as 'bulletproof' and 'you might be able to get a million kilo's on that thing'.

While my humble Matrix is below your standards, I find it encouraging that even Toyota's lower tier vehicles are very well engineered (minus the sound system, but that's an easy fix).

I agree with the base Hyundais...but when you look at the Equus or the Genesis (Sedan) models things get more interesting. I was looking at the used Genesis sedans for $27k...they were baked potatoes with bacon and cheese

+1 for Acuras, we've had three in the family and all have been great mechanically with nothing outside of regular maintenance up to the 150k we usually own them to. Resell value is great on them too.

Who loves their Toyota? I say this as a guy who currently owns one, BTW. They are very good, very reliable, tight cars, but they're difficult to love. Quite like is as far as I would go. They don't have anything to appeal to an enthusiast in their entire line right now (and it has been that way since they dropped the Supra, MR2 and Celica).

I mean frankly, if I want color or zing, I'll buy a motorcycle.

I bought the jeep on a whim, and I enjoyed it, but it was a matter of me buying a name and a concept. At this point, I don't want to do that.

I'm not a car guy, I'm 48 so my midlife crisis at this point probably won't manifest itself in a car.
