There are many points. Auston Matthews points.

I know the cool and popular thing to do it hate on Jones. He may have been a frustrating player at times, but he definetly played with heart and gave it his all. He was a Flame for over 2.5 seasons. Jones was a key part in our playoff run last year and was huge for us in the playoffs. It's not his fault he was injured quite a bit, or that he was overpaid. And it's certainly not his fault that Feaster made that trade.
So thank you for you time in Calgary David Jones.
Also,I think it is ridiculous that TheScorpions thread got closed. What's the big deal about it? Sure he's probably trolling but theres nothing wrong with an appreciation thread about a former Calgary Flame. Posters like him are what keep this forum interesting. I used to respect Jiri quite a bit, but I really think he should not have locked that thread, plus Jiris' comment before he locked it was a bit much. Especially for a mod.

Very much agreed. The reactions were pretty brutal in that thread. Yeah, Jones had a really bad season, but doesn't mean we shouldn't treat our players with respect. Even when they're leaving.
Just basic manners people.

Made room for a young guy. Call up Freddie Hamilton and/or Hunter Shinkaruk!

I don't hate on Jones but I recognize that was an extremely poor trade by Feaster to acquire a defenseman they had to bury in the AHL and pay a 4th line player well over $8 million for 2.5 seasons work. After a quick start this season he was terrible and IMO this trade is more about getting him off the roster than it is the 6th round pick.

So should the Flames, who maybe aren't going to use Backstrom, "send him home" so he doesn't take up practice ice?

Backstrom would be a better mentor to Ortio if anything. They play a more similar style than Hiller does.
Could also turn into a goaltending coaching gig too. I'll be honest, I'm confident that all of the issues are on the goalies themselves, but with the coaching as well. Maybe they give Backstrom a 1 year on the super cheap deal. Back Up Ortio and mentor him for a full season.

After watching Hiller tonight, I see no problem in giving Backstrom a chance.

This whole thing with the scorpion is getting out of hand. If anything, he's the reason most around here turned on Jones. The guy would post waaaay too often and for the most part it wasn't contributing to anything. He spoke way to highly of Jones and borderline out other, better players down in the process. Monahan an only score 1 goal but Jones is awsomes!
Anyway, we should be happy that the flames picked up anything of value for a guy who had no future with the team. This also opens up a roster spot for a young guy. There are so many positives to come from this and it seems to have been ruined by a poster going overboard. I'm not mad at the mods, if anything I'm glad they've stopped a troll fro escalating things even further.

Jones is built for the playoffs, was very very underrated last playoffs for the Flames, with a lot of hits and solid play, against Vancouver and one of the only strong physical forwards against Anaheim after Ferland was basically toasted his second shift. 5 points in 11 playoff games last year.
Some highlights off the top of my head:
1) He started that comeback against the Canucks game 1 in the 3rd, after a tepid first two periods for the Flames. A goal, and then almost potted one just before Russell scored.
2) Of course starting the play of the series winning clincher in Game 6.
3)On the Bennett no goal game 3 vs ANA, watch him crush the ANA defender twice and then the backhand pass to Bennett.
Also, earlier in the year, him crashing to the net with the puck, knowing Chara is waiting in front, started the Flames miraculous comeback vs the Bruins.
Flames get smaller on paper, if that's possible, up front with him now gone. Understand why he's gone, but the Flames have one more need for next year and that's a big forward, preferably 3.
Certainly provided more than an Iginla-less Tanguay would've these last 2.5 years.

I'm actually excited about Backstrom. Lots of goalies just have to get hot at the right time. Does age always matter? I think a 38 year OLD Roloson was decent for the Oilers.
