After digesting the trade a bit, I look at it this way:
If we had traded Russell for Jokipakka straight up, it's not a bad trade. He's bigger, younger, cheaper - has another year at $900k - and probably has more upside. If he meshes with Hamilton on the 2nd pair, that's a huge win.
Throw in a 2014 2nd rounder that probably has similar upside to a young Granlund (but bigger)
Then add in a 2nd round pick (many thought that is all Russell would return) that has a chance of becoming a 1st.
Beauty!

I voted "maybe slightly more than I expected" only because my expectations going in to this were admittedly pretty high. But this was a fantastic trade. Well done, Brad Treliving.

Good thing about a hard working GM is your going to find more gems. Too bad it wasn't Brad dealing Iggy he probably would have done a lot more work to find the best return.

Agreed for the most part, although I'm not going to speak on Jokipakka's upside until I see him play a few games. Seems he was 3rd on the depth chart as far as Dallas' D prospects go and was being scratched in favor of other players (obviously it is a deep pool of talent).
Many Dallas fans would tell you that Pollock has the most value/upside in this trade. As a recent 2nd rounder it looks like he's progressed solidly (stats being misleading as the team is no longer a powerhouse) so I would set his value as a high 2nd round pick.
Even if Jpak doesn't play a single game for the Flames I would consider this trade a win. Anything he can do for us in the future is icing on the cake.

I hope BT redeems himself this July 1st. If can get as good at free agency as he is at contract negotiations and trades... oh man.
It's all going to come down to the goaltender that he lands. If we get another Hiller I'm going to be sad.
Not sure he'll have money to play around with in order to do any blockbuster deals. Unless BT can do some more wizardry with Gaudreau and Monahan's new contracts.

Curious why you think he will play with Hamilton as #4 dman? I would expect nakladal or Witherspoon will get a look at filling that spot for the rest of the year and he will slide into our 3 pairing with wideman.
After digesting some of the info out there I'm completely happy with this trade. A player a prospect and a pick for a UFA. All this while other gms talk about how slow this trade deadline was. Moving out 3 of the 4 UFAs for futures is a feather in Brads hat. Especially with how incompetent it has made Benning look.

So you would put the 24 year old Jokipakka significantly ahead of the 22 year old Wotherspoon? He did not play his first NHL game until he was older than Wotherspoon is now.
Perhaps Wotherspoon is the magic mesher with Hamilton.... Hamilton has gone through Gio, Russell and Wideman and Engelland is looking like the better player in the current pairing.
The comparable that I think is valid to Pollak is Klimchuck. Similar numbers as Juniors in the WHL with Klimchuck a bit better.
So on the plus side you could say that Pollak is basically worth a Flames 1st round pick (outside of Monahan/Bennett that does not mean they will be NHLers.)

For sure. Moving Hudler when he did contributed to making Vrbata harder to move, and the Russell deal sealed Hamuis' fate.
I love it

Joker is better than Wotherspoon and has 4 times as much NHL experience. Nakladal has been OK so far, but again has far less NHL experience and its obvious isnt yet completely comfortable playing on NHL sized ice yet.
Engelland would likely slot in for Russel's spot before either Nak or Wotherspoon
Sorry if this has already been discussed, but from a cheering for Dallas perspective, is the rank order of outcomes to maximize our value on that pick as follows?:
1. Dallas loses in conference finals
2. Dallas loses in Cup final
3. Dallas wins cup
4. Dallas loses in first round
5. Dallas loses in 2nd round

As long as Dallas makes the conference final, win or lose, we get their first.
As long as Russell played in 50% of their playoff games to that point. He could have a season ending injury tomorrow and the flames get the 2nd even if Dallas wins the cup
