Two 2nds are significantly more than what Schultz returned. Russell isn't that much better than Polak, but he didn't return two seconds, there were other peices involved.

The only team that might have two 2nds this year and linked to Russell are the Pens (and it is debatable that they still have the same level of interest after acquiring Schultz)
They would get their own 2nd back if they qualify for playoffs as part of the Kessel trade.
They also got Anaheim's 2nd in the Brandon Sutter to Vancouver trade.
edit: It is possible for the Bruins to get a 2nd from the Oilers as compensation for hiring Chiarelli, but the Oilers have a choice of the 2nd being this year or next year and it is highly unlikely they choose this year.
edit 2: misread the conditions of the trade

And as some Leafs fans have speculated, when you add up all the pices that were swapped in both the Shark-Leaf trades last week, you are basically looking at Spaling, Polak and Reimer being worth 2 2nds, because the other pieces are essentially a wash.

It seems like Treliving is hoarding draft picks now, when they are cheap. Then I expect him to unload some at the draft, when they are more valuable. He did the same thing last year and it got us Dougie Freakin' Hamilton.

I think they get their own 2nd back, not Toronto's.

Two seconds is a strong return. I am certain the 2nd would be in a future year. Maybe even both of them although I don't think Flames would go for that. Hopefully this means a 2nd and a 3rd is already on the table.

We used a 4th on Gaudreau. Would trading him for 2 2nds be great?
Not saying 2 2nds wouldn't be a great return for Russell - it would. But what we paid for him is irrelevant - you always push for the maximum price possible, what you paid for the asset originally no longer matters.

Anyone think Roope Hintz would be a good return from the Stars for Russell? 6'3 Finn drafted in the 2nd round last year:
Hockey Forecaster:
Is a very versatile forward who can line up either on the wing or at center, which adds to his overall value. Can be a factor on special teams, especially as a penalty-killing forward. Is quite suited to the North American game, especially due to his projectable frame.

The Caps now have the space to take on Russell. Flames will get their 1st and a future 3rd.

You've got to imagine the Caps are in on Russell. Carlson is out for the next month with an injury, they need depth on defence. They had Niskanen playing 24 minutes tonight, nobody else had more than 20. Russell could definitely help out their top 4 if they traded for him.

With the Caps freeing up space, it's good the Flames are still in the game with Russell. Good management to wait it out for the best deal.
Glad Treliving is patient.

Here's comments from Washington GM MacLellan. Maybe we can get that first.
“We’re in the win-now,” MacLellan said. “I mean, I look at it, and I don’t see huge upgrades out there. I mean, I see the names. Is it a huge upgrade? Is it going to have that big an impact on our team? I don’t believe so.”
“We’re going for it this year, we’re going for it next year and then after that, we’re evaluating where we’re at,” MacLellan said. “I mean, we’re going to have some decisions to make as far as veteran players, and our young guys are going to be due for some pay raises.”

Barber looks good. Putting up really good numbers in his 1st year in Hershey. Wouldn't mind a shot at getting the kid. Top 20 scorer in he AHL as a rookie. I'm cure the Caps are really high on him though.
Galiev has struggled with the caps this year. Floating in and out of their line up.

Anyone have a link to that chart that assigns numerical value to draft picks?
I'd like to see what two 2nds say #50 and #55 is equivalent to value wise.

I would be ok with 2nds if that is what we got.
I was more hoping that the Flames could package something with Russell and acquire a higher-end prospect from some organization. Nichushkin and Drouin both seem like pipe-dreams.
I would be comfortable at the moment with giving up Russell + Klimchuk + Shinkaruk for Nichushkin - or even add Poirier to that. Expensive I think - essentially 3 first round picks + whatever Russel's market value is (which seemed to essentially be cut in half from the chatter yesterday - one 1st + 1 second IIRC, now just two 2nds).
I don't mind the straight-out picks - I think they are much more useful than 'B'-level prospects anyways - but I was really hoping that Treliving would be going hard after a blue-chip prospect/young player to a team that is trying to win now, even if it meant attaching other notable prospects to packages to do so.
