I would have taken Zykov straight up for Russell. Great deal for the Canes

I suppose there's always a chance but he only has 14 points in 43 AHL games so far. He may need some more seasoning in the minors first if he makes it at all.

Carolina has really taken advantage of Lombardi these two past deadlines.
A 1st + Roland McKeown + Zykov + 5th for 16 games of Sekera + Versteeg

Zykov's got a fair number of red flags in that his performance was worse in his age 19 season than his draft year and then he's struggled at least pointwise in the AHL.

Yeah Zykov's numbers look more worrying than impressive.

Good on the Canes to finally start rebuilding. A few years too late if you ask me

I don't think McKeown or Zykov will amount to anything personally. I think these trades will essentially be a wash unless LA wins the cup (and Versteeg plays a role) and/or Carolina gets something with the picks.

Why is everybody so in love with Zykov?
Talk about a marginal prospect at best.
If we had traded Russell for him today, he would go to Stockton and be a 4th liner, or maybe not even dress.
What the heck would be the point of that?

If he doesn't fit under the cap LA will find a way to not pay him.

Again, like Koko... The sexy name effect.
Nobody would be in love with him if his name was Paul Howard.

I only remember Valentin Zykov because he has such a wicked name. Sounds like he belongs in science fiction novel.

Zykov was a highly thought of prospect in his draft year. Things just kind of went a bit downhill for him since.
He may indeed benefit from a change of scenery, however. LA fans seem to think he has good upside still, but there were starting to be bigger questions as to if he would ever make the NHL based on how his development was going. Sometimes these prospects just really benefit from a change of scenery, though often they just continue to show themselves as not NHL-material.

So what I'm taking from this thread is that this is not a better return than what we got for Hudler?
