The Stars have Brennan Evans in their system (probably on an AHL contract) but maybe he can be thrown in for nostalgia.

I would be willing to throw in Janko for a big RW in the right age range. I am comfortable with Monahan and Bennett being top 2 line centers, with Backlund being a solid 3C. No natural RW's in the system is a problem, Nichushkin would really address this problem. With a little luck in the 2016 draft, the Flames could address their 3
RW problem in a 4 month period.

Fair enough, I'm just thinking our loud. I really like the kid but I also want to see a winger for Johnny brought in. Can't bank on Laine/Puljujarvi so I'm hoping we see something today or tomorrow.

Jankowski is the no.1 Center on the reigning NCAA championship team. He's 21 years old, 6'4, 205lbs. 38 points in 34 games this season. Known for being defensively responsible (+24 this year) and an offensive skillset to match.

What's not to like about him?

Nothing, he's great. I've supported him since the beginning. I just think that Treliving might/could use him as a piece to land an even bigger fish.

Probably just stems from people who were determined to hate the draft choice in the first place. Stubborn bias even though he's looking more and more like he might fit in nicely with the Flames!

What is the risk of Janko "Justin Schultzing it" visa vie becoming UFA versus signing with his draft team, i.e. us.

I'm honestly asking cause I don't know, but isn't his situation and development path ripe for that type of a situation to play out?

That does not describe me at all. I just don't view any prospect as untouchable in the right deal. If he's a peice Nill insists on for Nichushkin, I think you do it (provided the other pieces make sense).

Nichushkin is a pretty big fish. Both literally and figuratively.

Pretty much zero chance. Nothing to indicate otherwise.

He could refuse to sign after his college season is done and the Flames would get a 2nd rounder as compensation.

Based on his comments/personality from summer camps and everything we've seen about him to this point, it is extremely low IMO.

However, until he signs, the risk exists.

If he waits til August he'll be UFA and he can sign with whoever. Arnold could have done the same the year he and Johnny signed with us. Pretty sure we'll lock him up after his season is done just like we did with Arnold and Johnny. I haven't seen any reason to think he wouldn't sign.

FLA 2016 2nd round pick

That effectively boils down to the Hamilton trade again. I'd be overjoyed if Treliving can pull something like that off.
In the universe where Russell rental is worth the 15th pick overall.... Brazal... was available

Jankowski is 6 months older than Nichushkin. They are almost exactly the same size.

He'd already be signed if the Flames had wanted him to turn Pro. Unless he harbors resentment from being told to play out his senior year, I'd give the Shultzing probability 0/10 chicken littles

There's never been any indication that he wouldn't sign here. He's come to every dev camp (and every year he's shown more and more, to the point at the most recent camp, he was the best player on the ice).

Treliving stated (back in November) he intends to sign him.

Thanks for all the responses. Not trying to fear monger but after reading everyone's responses, I'd say the big difference between Johnny and Janko situations, is the Flames were essentially willing to write off a whole contract year and pay out a big bonus for one game of play the year he signed. That had to be huge from a Gaudreau perspective in being willing to sign, that and he could be super confident he'd be starting in Calgary. Not sure the Flames would be as willing on the contract front with Janko, and we are much deeper at centre with Monny and Bennett that I could understand how Janko might be more motivated to explore options.

Sounds like it's not likely, but I'd had to have that first rounder disappear after all the effort we've but in.
