the anticipated return for Russell is allegedly a 1st +
so that proposal is 1st + a plus + Jankowski
that's too much
Calgary will need to deal with a starter goalie problem this summer somehow. RW is also a big problem. Addressing our urgent need for an RW with Nichushkin NOW is worth losing a good C prospect. We've got other good centers.

"Too much" is likely what it would take to get a player like Nichushkin out of Dallas at this stage.
edit - And I'm ok with that. Calgary desperately needs a RW that can fill top line minutes and play a heavier style. Nichushkin fits that bill and would be a great fit in Calgary.
He's our best C prospect (by far).
I don't want him involved in a 'pay too much' trade.

Use Shinkaruk instead.
I doubt Jankowski is ever more than a 3C, not that there's anything wrong with that. If you can turn him into a potential elite winger to play with Johnny, you have to consider it, even if it involves attaching a late 2nd and a UFA.

For the record, I like Jankowski.
3rd line upside max? No way.
His upside is huge. Excellent skill, size and skating combo. I'd pretty be hesitant to deal him at this point, he's having a tremendous year. For Nichushkin I'd certainly consider it because Nichushkin's upside is also huge. In general I think fans underrate Jankowski's upside and value at this point.

Moving Jankowski could be a huge mistake right now, because he won't get much in return but he could wind up a big part of any team's middle six going forward. If he's part of a package that gets you want you need (starting 4D) then sure, consider it.
I would move Russell + 2016 2nd + one of Poirier, Klimchuk for Nichushkin, in a heartbeat. Fat chance 'tho.

Fair enough. I just see him slotting behind Monahan and Bennett as a 2-way center. I don't think he will be a big scorer in the NHL but I think he will have a decent career of sorts. Not sure what his ceiling truly is but I don't see how he ever rises above Monahan and Bennett here. Unless Bennett stays on the wing but I think that would be a mistake because he has 1st line potential. I think Sammy will be our #1 center as soon as next year.

You don't worry about that yet. He probably needs at least one year in the minors maybe two anyways. And there is the chance you switch him to wing during that period.
Big, skilled, top two line centres are one of the most valuable commodities in the NHL. If we can develop Jankowski into that then its huge for us whether we trade him later or not. You can basically trade a big skilled, top two line centre for any other commodity you want.
A rental player isn't getting Nichushkin without serious additions. I feel Dallas would want Russell + Kylington + conditional pick (depending on if he re-signs with Dallas). Jankowski/Klimchuk/Poirier/Shinkaruk are B level prospects. Nill will likely want a more enticing prospect.
