If Russell goes for a 1st will you come back on Monday and say "wow I was wrong" or will you just start bashing Frolik and Hamilton again ?

I will be extremely happy to be wrong about Russell.
I don't think that getting a 1st for Russell makes the Hamilton and Frolik contracts any better.
You must be a bit Bat-s**t crazy yourself as it appears that you agree with my past positions and even not that confident to defend Gio's contract.
Since I seem to be one of the more closely monitored posters on this forum it should be quite easy to point out my obvious wrong positions.
A few years ago I started a thread that I thought the Flames would catch the Canucks but was dead wrong (Bouwmeester and Stempniak).

Wouldn't rule out #Flames re-signing Russell in summer if traded to a team with salary cap concerns #NHL

I think of the Flames can move Wideman and one of Smid or Engellend they will bring Russell back next year hopefully not $5M per

I have such a hard time seeing the reason of bringing him back. He is not the type of dman we need in our top 4.

What happens in the offseason doesn't matter. What if Russell goes to a contender and wins a cup? Having already made 10MM+$USD in his career would he be happy to sign with Calgary for 3X3? And be a 5-6 dman?
I know if it was me making the decision I would absolutely do that. Even after tax and escrow that's around 10MM net
There's not much you couldn't you do with that. He also is good friends with glencross so he knows how quick the tables can turn
We should be getting as much value in picks prospects while we can. Should have done the same for cammelarie

Is this limit of 3-4 based on the convoluted RGI?
You can't say his contract is a disaster until he stops earning it. He just eclipsed his career high in goals despite a poor start to the season. He still anchors the top pair which is our best offensive and defensive pairing. He's a phenomenal captain. You can't say the contract is a disaster until there's a significant drop in his play. It could happen, but there's a chance he could also remain elite into his mid-late 30's like Lidstrom. Guy is a fitness freak. Don't bash the guy on an assumption that he will regress until it actually happens.

Good god, no.
Your expectations are lowered by nothing more than this bizarre fixation of irrational ire that you harbour for a handful of players combined with an arbitrary and hilariously callow perspective of the relationship between player contracts, salary cap, and the rules of free agency. You're posts read like a caricature. It's all funny and exasperating at the same time.

How often does this happen? Am I not paying attention, or is it quite uncommon?

happens from time to time. Vermette did it last year.
Also remember Doug Weight doing it.

Keith Tkachuk did it with the thrashers as well. It's pretty uncommon though I'd say

Not to mention Jokinen, who the Flames traded to the Rangers (along with Prust) for Higgins and Kotalik, and then re-signed the following summer. Always found the re-signing to be a bit of a head scratcher.

To a lesser extent Tanguay did too but that took a couple of seasons of floating in Montreal and Tampa before he came crawling back.
