2nd + 4th seems pretty decent compared to those deals/non-deals for a player who half a bad half year.

Wow, it's amazing how much the value of rentals fluctuates year to year
Vanek couldn't get a first, but vermette could (if I recall correctly)
Anyways, I didn't really like the trade at first, but I'm guess I'm fine with it now. The Polak trade kind of threw things off compared to the other trades.

It's gonna be hard to replace Hudler both internally and in free agency. A winger who can be on your top line is always hard to replace. I think the Flames would've resigned him if it wasn't for the bad contracts already on the team. Smid, Raymond, Stajan, Hiller and Engelland cost this team a good talent

Again, a bit of a headscratcher on why people are so upset....
If Calgary was a playoff team this year, would you have given up a 1st + for a guy like Hudler?
come on...
|
This is it. Heck, we are expecting a 1st for Russell. If the Flames were going to give up a mid 1st for a guy like Russell, i'd be pissed.
Think about it from other teams perspective, they're not dying to give away their assets for aging UFAs.

If the Flames can dump two or three of those bad contracts I'm sure the team could still re-sign Hudler in the summer. They've traded him for the playoff run. They didn't fire him into the sun. He'll likely still be a UFA come summer and open to coming back to Calgary.

I sure hope they don't bring him back. Too old, and he's only going to lose another step.

My attitude wrt Hudler is pretty much the same as with Russell... If they are still sitting around in late August because they misjudged the market, I would give either/both around a 2 x 2... Hudler is small, and slow, but he is skilled, and a guy that can play in your top 6 is worth something... especially as we don't have anybody internally that seems capable at this point. Unless we fall for a Finn.

Laugh, it's took less than 24 hours before the former Flames brigade is out trying to acquire a player we just traded because he's clearly not in the plans moving forward.

Yeah, that's exactly what I said. I didn't say they were going to, I said it remained a possibility as the player was going to free agency. I don't believe Hudler will be re-signed, since there were no explorations of a possible contract, but the possibility still exists. I think this scenario will come into play with the trading of Russell. They'll move him and then try and re-sign him in the off season. I think this would be a mistake and the team should just move on from both players.

I'm happy to move on from Hudler. Small, slow forward who likely will regress is not a player we should be targeting. I'd pay Lucic 7 before I paid Hudler 5.

I'm a commodity trader. Sometimes when the market seems poised to move up I back up my offer and let bids come to me. The risk in that is the upward blip is short lived and you miss your chance to sell at what you would have accepted.
If you have say two units (players) to sell, it's better to sell one in an upward market and then back the offer back on the 2nd one. If it's a blip you get one done, if it's a full on push upward you get one done where you thought fair and the other at a premium.
At the end of the day you need to move assets for something or they just walk away for nothing.
If the upward move turns into a free fall you're hitting bids and making sure you don't get stuck.
All gut and experience.
Really surprised at the negativity for this trade, poll shocks me.

Some posters fail to realize that this might have been the absolute best out there. Your personal expectations don't determine the market. Who's to say he waits till the deadline and the best offer we get then is worse than the one we got from Florida? That is entirely a possibility. Knowing the due dillegence Treliving does I trust that they weighed their options and felt this was the best decision. Hudler was never bringing back a 1st. He was never bringing back a top prospect. He's a small, slow, one dimensional player with 10 goals on the season who is a 32 year old UFA and is looking for a huge raise. No one is giving up anything substantial for him.

Hudler is a top line player on a bad team who's likely to be out of the league in three years. What did you think he was worth?

Slept on it, i think it is a fair return and smart for brad to trade him now. the price probably would have gone down looking at the amount of forwards on the block that dont have his skill but have other intangibles that are valuable for a team looking for a deep playoff run like speed or size.

A 2nd round pick. That we got another pick kicked in is a nice little bonus. I would have preferred an already drafted prospect in return, someone a little further ahead in their development, but the picks are fine. Might be able to rally those picks into a prospect from another team that is caught in a numbers crunch or needs a change of scenery. It's two assets that Treliving has to work with now. Two we didn't have 48 hours ago.

Absolutely no way to tell what kind of 4th rounders there will be in 2018 lol or even 1st rounders lol

I've never thought that winning the lady byng is really something to "brag" about, especially at playoff time, but that's just me

That's some pretty solid cherry picking there. Holy crap.
