No issue with getting prospects, but Jiri was never going to net us the prospects that would make us happy. We have enough of the caliber of prospects we'd have gotten back IMO so in not sure we'd feel any different, but I guess we don't know for sure.

I have to think that the best deal was made. However, I am a little disappointed it wasn't for a second and something more valuable than a 4th in 2018.

I'm sure he will be sorely missed...especially by Gaudreau and Monahan. I think he was extremely important in their development.

I wish him all the best.

I'll miss Jiri's facial expressions.

I expected a 2nd & 3rd and hoped for a late 1st or 2nd and decent prospect.
Ladd was gone early so I expected teams to go after huds a little more aggressively.

so what the heck is Hudler and his agent thinking? Ladd was making 4.4 on a 5 year deal and Hudler 4 on a 4 year deal and Hudler thinks he deserves a raise???

As long as the Flames continue to stockpile picks in the top 70, that's the important thing. More picks the better. Currently they have 4 in the top 70, if they can get that up to 5 or 6 that would be even better.

The return is not great but it is what it is. Acceptable return instead of keeping him for 20 games and letting him go.

We are 48 hours from the deadline. The only other option Treliving had was to wait it out and see if something better came along.

We did that with Cammalleri and look what we got in return!

Given what Justin Schultz just yielded. I am all for trading Smid, Wideman and Russell!

Defensemen have way more value at this trade deadline it would seem.

the return is the return. I love Hudler, but we all have to admit that he's not in the same stratosphere as Ladd is as a rental heading into the playoffs.

Scoring wingers, are the NHL's version of a bottle of cheeze whiz, its not really cheese so you don't pay a premium for it, because there's tons of cheese whiz out there.

I'm glad Treliving got out ahead on doing a couple of deals rather than get trapped in a situation where there are lots of sellers and few buyers.

With Chicago more or less out of it at this point (you never know), there is one fewer 'whale' out there. If Carolina and Jersey are being wishy washy on whether they are selling or not, or if Vancouver is being tardy in hearing from Hamhuis whether he's willing to waive or not, sometimes you've got to realize when the value of what you're selling is lower than it was initially and that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

If guys like Stempniak are truly available that really waters down your asking price for Hudler. At the end of the season I'd rather be holding a 2nd and a 4th than a hotdog and a handshake.

And I just watched the Flames peddle off a legitimate top 6 scoring winger for a couple of picks without having ever reached out to him to see if he could be brought back on a deal to bridge the team to whatever comes next.

That's why I'm underwhelmed. I don't see the plan.
Those are pretty much my thoughts also on this trade.

Ladd wants a raise too. $6.8M if reports are true.

Ladd is a better all around player - always has been, with the possible exception of what everyone knows was Hudler's once-in-a-career season last year. Ladd can play up and down the lineup. Hudler is only valuable to a team with room in the top 6. Ladd can kill penalties and play powerplay. Hudler only the latter. Hudler may be somewhat of a leader, but Ladd is an acknowledged one. Ladd has rings with two different teams, including the one who just got him. Plus, size and physicality is what most teams want in the POs. They mostly already have their skill guys set up.

And the Jets are retaining salary.

News Update

Treliving press conference on now.

Felt the price was the best available and waiting wouldn't have yielded more, best to move on the trade offer now in that case.

Re: Keeping Hudler?
Cap situation heading into next year, whether Jiri could fit going forward and who has raises coming up drove the decision to trade him.

Freeway: Picks vs prospects?
BT: We like picks, both for drafting and their value increase more and more as you approach the draft.

Timeline of the trade:
Talked to Dale Tallon for a while now. Stayed in touch after he expressed some interest.

Thinks its a tight market right now with the financial reality. Picks have a greater value as a result. Whether you're making the pick or trading it at the draft.

How do you project the next 2 days?
We're going to try and see if we can help ourselves. You've seen some teams be real aggressive. Think its going to be much more organized, less trying to connect WiFi's from planes. We'll see how much activity there will be involving Calgary.

Russell rumours
Don't believe all the reports about Russell, things can spread this time of year with false reports. Thinks the world of Kris Russell. Won't comment on interest levels, but he's smart and a good hockey player. Good hockey players always generate lots of interest. Cannot say enough good things about him though.

Difficult part of this time of the year, because there's a lot of activity, is talking about players as assets but can't forget these are people. Have to treat them in a dignified way.

Freeway: Anticipating any call-ups?
Yes, we're looking at that regardless of any other moves. I would anticipate someone is going to join us for the road trip.

What impact did Hudler have on the young players?
He's a skilled player, he helped drive the young players. He always talked to Johnny and Mono, and sometimes they even understood what he was saying! Real competitive player, wouldn't hesitate when he didn't think something wasn't good enough. Very skilled but able to keep things loose. After game 2 in Vancouver series, many had been talking about struggles Johnny and Mono had. Treliving went to go talk to the kids and Hudler stepped up and said "I got it."

How challenging has the last couple days been with Wideman hearing?
"Challenging is a word, I've got others". No date given when it will be announced. It is what it is at this point, we've dealt with it and we move on. Don't expect anything soon though.

What's the state of Derek Grant?
Progressing. Broke his jaw in practice, had it wired shut but not in-depth surgery. Hopeful at the time it would be 6-8 week timeline but we'll see. First part of this week he'll get looked at. But he's a ways away.

Won't make predictions about what they may or may not do. But we'll try and help ourselves.

Maybe we should wait and see what kind of deals they sign this summer before we have this discussion.

Was less than I initially expected and felt disappointed when the trade first broke, but it's not at all horrible. Still a decent return. Just thought the market was trending upwards but in the end this is still good for Huds.

Will miss him. He was pivotal in the development of Sean and Johnny.
