I figured that this should be a thread (although it was brought up in the transit thread I think). This has been contentious and last night at the open house apparently things were quite confrontational.
Here is an overview of the open house: http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/city-holds...tway-1.2789600
So today, after what became quite heated, Nenshi has ended further public consultation on the project. http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...taff-assaulted
The project was originally approved by council in 2011, and received some press again when some funds were allocated to it this past fall.

I live in the neighbourhood. I'm embarrassed... some of the actions of people in this area are really shameful.
The last few meetings in this area have been over-the top ridiculous, not just the one last night. This is a great project for the community and the city at large, but there is a growing number of people in this area that are fighting any sort of development..from skateboard parks to this...it really doesn't matter.

It's ridiculous....what's to seriously get angry about easy access to public transportation? I don't get it.

Public consultation hadn't ended, just public open houses. Consultation will still happen online.

The problem is that this jams traffic up against the sound walls. Any increase to road noise that leaks through to homes is unacceptable.

Road noise? Traffic won't increase because of this....that's the whole point!

Right, sorry, I should've phrased that as face-to-face public consultation. I can't say I disagree with the mayor here; when you have physical confrontations and a death threat (!!) you have to think that its going to put a stop to these things. Who knew that increased transit would get so heated.

Its weird because it doesn't even seem like its new. I am sure that when I spoke with Nenshi as he was campaigning in 2010 he talked about adding these lanes (or something like them) to 14th Street.

I remember Rick Donkers being a reporter for many respectable local news outlets. Now he's schilling for these guys?
Hard times Rick? Or genuinely concerned local resident?

CBC found a cheaper Don Cherry replacement. Just needed a dumb dumb added into his rant and it would have been spot on.

I recall hearing an expert from the city (I believe) saying the pipeline issue is total BS (obviously) as there are hundreds of pipelines under roads all over the city.

I'm kinda with Nenshi on this one. All this over a bus line?
What an embarrassingly vocal display of NIMBY.

Hundreds?

There are hundreds under EVERY Single individual road in the city. Maybe not pipelines, but things that are just as easy to break by a car driving several feet above. Water lines, sanitary lines, storm lines, electrical ducts, and so on.

Can someone explain the negatives of having the SW BRT?
I live very close to 24 St SW and Fish Creek and I keep hearing people saying that it will drop property values, increase crime. How true is that?

My only concern would be noise from buses, but really, how often would a bus pass by to make it such a case?

Thanks in advance |
