Yes, this is what Vancouver needs to conduct its rebuild: fewer draft picks.

Don't think a 5th rounder in 1.25 years is going to make or break the rebuild at all.

Maybe not, but it's the wrong direction. Quantity has a quality all its own, and they need to stock the cupboard. What are the odds this one is Jamie Benn? Next to zilch, but you need a few bullets in the gun if you're going to get a hit. Hell, drafting outside the first round is supposed to be Benning's specialty. He should be trying to collect a bunch of extra kicks at the can.

Doesn't matter, the Canucks aren't rebuilding. They are trying to cheat the rebuild by nabbing other teams formerly highly touted cast offs hoping they catch lightning in a bottle.

It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them.

from a value standpoint though trading late round picks for players they think can contribute is +EV

I have no clue about Larsen but he's supposedly had a great few seasons in the KHL, and with how bad Edmonton was, not just in play but with coaching the last 8 years (their defensive zone play was legitimately SWARM) I don't think you can really judge players solely based on them bombing up north

to me though this speaks more to the weakness of the UFA d men this summer, they will need to add 2-3 and by trading a 5th for a cheap 3rd pairing guy who can help the power play its not a bad move, especially for next years 5th which can be recouped

From hf, couldn't agree more.

acquiring dmen from the Oilers doesn't seem like the best move...

Considering our two best players right now were fourth rounders I don't think they can afford to give up draft picks.

That's some questionable logic there.

Well when your direction from ownership is to make the playoffs, that is what you need to do. Benning is in the same situation as Sutter, just doing a poorer job. The thing is he'll probably get fired for failing and the next GM (Weisbrod?) will get to do the proper rebuild.

Weisbrod as the next Canucks GM you say? I support that!

Also love when ex Oilers rip the organization
It's not losing minds over a 5th round draft pick. It's the death by a 1000 cuts mentality the management group seems to have. Going out of their way to bring in mediocre players and expending multiple assets to do it. And doing these things at odd times and continually overpaying. The reasoning is suspect. The returns are suspect. And if it was on one of two moves no one cares. But it's not. It's the large majority of moves. And that an issue. So when something like this happens it's a case of more fuel to the tire fire that is the canucks management right now.

It's a tough task he was given but he agreed with the task and to this day supports the the direction ownership has set. He screwed up his first summer when he had cap space and assets to move. He failed (and continues to do so) use any leverage to his advantage.

I actually don't mind this from Vancouver's perspective.

They are going to be short bodies on the back end next year (due, admittedly, to their own incompetence) and I would think he has a more than reasonable chance of making the team. If he does, they get games out of him and maybe move him at the deadline.

If not, it's a 5th.

Regardless, this trade illustrates just how much of a cluster **** BOTH these organizations are right now, and it makes me very happy!
