Ermm... no.

There is plenty you can do. Like not having automated scripts tweeting on behalf of a highly followed professional sports franchise. Everything that comes from the official account should be double checked by a person.

It's not comparable to us posting obscene content on this message board. We are nothing, and CP is nothing... relatively speaking.

No. Are you not aware how Twitter works? No matter what you tweet at them, that message (or a deceivingly obscene handle) is only getting out if the official account replies to it or retweets it. Twitter is not a message board.

There are clearly programs that can automatically tweet stuff.

Ya there isn't some guy pressing okay to send that welcome message out a million times. That would be a full time job haha.

It's not "stuff"... the script is simply replying - a Twitter reply includes the handle of the source tweet (which is what has sunk the Habs here) and, in the case of the Habs' script, an automatically generated pre-scripted message. The program may also natively retweet, which includes the handle of the source tweet as well as the source content in its entirety. The script is not generating random content... it's either replying to tweets sent to the Habs, or in the case of this stupid promotion, parsing the list of handles who have recently followed the account and sending them said pre-scripted message.

yeah I get it, trust me I get it lol if you only knew what my career is and has been since the internet basically started

it was a auto re-tweet

point is sh1t happens, no need to fire a guy and go crazy...its an obvious mistake and people have seen worse on the internet. They will learn from it and move on

A mention/reply, really. There was no source tweet.

I agree that nobody needs to be fired... my point is merely that they should no longer try to use any type of script and just manually reply to fewer people with more personalized messages.

I don't think anyone should be fired. It's the stupid internet. No one was hurt, no one is going to no longer support their team cause of this. It's a non-issue.
This reminds me of this XKCD

And I'm guessing they'll be looking for some new software, instead of Hootsuite or whatever they use for that stuff.

Ah, the kids nowadays. I had to deal with this kind of crap in the 90s, and it was pretty much impossible to script one's way out of the problem. At that time, ‘Leet’ was all the rage among stupid and antisocial 14-year-old wannabe hackers, and the one thing at which they showed great creativity was finding ways to spell naughty words that the profanity filters would not catch.

The offending word in this case? They'd have probably spelt it beginning with the character string, |\|!993 … well, you get the idea. Add in the ability to use Unicode characters that look vaguely like Roman letters, and the problem becomes effectively insoluble. XKCD had it right.

On the board I used to run, we had a special user setting for twerps of this kind. We downgraded their account to level ‘KKK-Rad’, which meant they had zero access to anything, but (unlike a deleted account) we had a complete record of everything they had pulled and as much information as we could glean about them personally. I think ‘KKK-Rad’ was actually one level lower than ‘Banned’.
