Really gotta feel for the guy running that account. Huge celebration, huge accomplishment on his part. Time, effort, excitement... now a huge problem for him to answer to.

We live in a crappy crappy world.

I think it's hilarious that their efforts to be friendly with the auto-replies have backfired so badly.

I also think all this "lost faith in humanity" stuff is an overreaction, this is nowhere near the limit of what the internet is capable of. As the minority at whom the original tweet is directed, I think the situation is laughable, not offensive.

I think this issue is Twitter's fault. How does their filter allow that Twitter account?

Me too, because there is nothing at all friendly about auto-reply.

It just baffles me that teams and organizations remain so clueless about the nature of social media. How on earth did the Habs not learn from the Patriots, UEFA and the Maple Leafs about how dangerous and stupid auto reply tweets can be?

As soon as people realize that a bot is sending out auto-replies this stuff happens.

At some point people should learn.

Especially since it has already happened to institutions much bigger than the Habs.

Basically a non story because it was a system generated reply to a racist account.

Still though, the person in charge should be fired.

You think they pay someone to verify that over a million names are acceptable?

Not possible.

No, but I'm saying the administration of the account should have set up auto filters for offensive language.

Especially since the tools exist. And especially because it happened to the Pats before.

No, but unfortunately the guy in charge of enabling auto-replies will come under fire for the result.

I don't think anyone will be fired or anything bad comes of this. This is a way for internet trolls to get some spotlight just like the John Scott fiasco. There will always be ways for idiots like this person to find a way to ruin something for others and make someone else look bad for it.

I don't think any less of the habs for this, it was someone else being a ####.

I would bet it was some suit that decided it would be a good idea to have the auto reply.

The guy running the account is probably a marketing/ PR guy.

No one probably wanted to pay for a programmer to develop a script that could auto-filter bad words to the point that it would catch a 1 in replacement for an I. That isn't easy or cheap to enable.

Yeah, for sure they should fire that guy for his obvious accidental mistake. Fire him all to heck.....c'mon.

Really? I know zero about programming but I have a hard time believing that?

I don't think anyone should be fired. It's the stupid internet. No one was hurt, no one is going to no longer support their team cause of this. It's a non-issue.

Think of all the websites that have swearing filters. All you have to do is spell it slightly wrong or leave a space. If they could easily screen for everything everyone would do it.

I do enjoy the knee jerk "fire that person" reactions to almost everything these days. Mistakes happen, and it's much easier to say "well, they should have thought about that" when you get the opportunity of hindsight. Just learn from it and move on.
