Bollig also led the Flames in Corsi that period, so #fancystats?

Perhaps last year when Wideman looked like a capable defenseman? Russell was definitely a lot more solid last year, I think some people are overlooking that.

Kings don't need to win the faceoff, they just get the puck right after.

Ferland is having a ruff game. Not taking dumb penalties, just out of sync.
Our towers of power on D, Wotherspoon and Nakladal both playing very well.
Ortio has been a rock! We need to know what we have with him, should be our starter for the rest of the season. Kinda unfair though, Kings are a great team, even a good NHL goalie could get shelled. Never the less he looks good!
Refs are helping the kings. Expected, shots on goal favor the kings alot due to powerplays and the fact they are a good team.
I am pretty happy after the first period. Tied at 0, guys I want to see do well are doing well.
Few bounces and a call here and there it could be a game.
Kings are good though, no doubt.

Wideman still looked as rough defensively last year as he did this year. The difference? Johnny isn't feeding him gimmies multiple times a game and bad puck luck
I dont know if Russel was that much better last year, or I just didn't notice how he never strips the puck from anyone or take a body. He just trails puck carriers in his end ineffectively and then puts his face in front of shots that only happen because he can't cover or defend well
I'd rather have someone from the heat doing that on an ELC. He must be a real force in the locker room because his play on the ice does NOT instill any sense of confidence when hes out there

Monahan 7/7 faceofffs that period. Guess after Getz and Kessler he's like "woah this is easy"

I don't think he was.
I think Wideman, paradoxically, was making Russell look better. he's the reason Russell broke 30 points.
Russell has always been basically the same player: bleeds shots and chances against, is over matched physically and guts it out largely based on compete level.
The difference for this team and russell compared to last year? Wideman: 56 points, 21 on the powerplay.

I was just being a little sarcastic. Not much to suggest Ortio would have been any better.

Off topic, but Ortio's mask is pretty terrible.
Reminds me of an Ottawa color scheme.

Hiller not playing those games might not have matter with how terrible Ramo was playing. Having three goalies was a pain in the ass but it wasn't the sole reason for him playing like junk.

This is the best possession team vs one of the worst. No surprises.
