Default HMCS Winnipeg comes home

I'm officially a member of WIN's crew as the SAC (Shipborne air controller) but got injured during mission WUPs (workups) and couldn't deploy.

But she came home today with most of her crew and made history with a male/male first kiss.

The media is spinning the first kiss as a statement by the RCN.. But.. That's not how it works with the first kiss.

It's a lottery, sailors buy tickets for a draw on the final leg of a deployment and the winner is first off the boat with a kiss from a loved one.

I am good friends with the sailor mentioned and am not trying to take anything away from his moment and the history marker.

I just think it's silly for the media to try and spin it that the RCN somehow set this up as a way to show the CF's acceptance of same sex couples.
We absolutely support individual rights and freedoms to love anyone you chose.

None the less, welcome home to my fellow sailors and I hope they have a safe and warm transition back to home life.

So what are s the general feeling about this amongst your shipmates?

I have always thought of the military as a fairly large collective of homophobes and racists

Yeah, I never saw that, and I was in the whole generation where there was a no ask no tell policy.

We just simply didn't care, we cared if the guy sitting next to you in the trench could be counted on when the bullets started to fly.

And racists, give me a break, serving in uniform made a lot of us color blind and race blind.

I hate the stereotype of all soldiers as knuckle dragging racist homophobes. Do they have representation, sure they do, the same as civilians.

I will state that the guys that were racists or made jokes outside of the realm of the usual out there soldier humor didn't last long in units with different races.

^ that is good to hear Captain. My opinion was formed while watching a group of military guys socialize and the jokes/negative comments were almost non-stop

Hollywood stereotypes is likely the cause of this thinking.

I didn't notice any racists when I was in either, however the misogyny is/was pretty bad.

This is all blown out of proportion as this is the traditional greeting for men in the Navy.

I remember when I was reserve with the sigs guys and we moved to the ship on the hill and had to share our mess with the Navy Guys, it didn't go over well, they thought we were rude and obnoxious and just plain nasty. We thought they were a bunch of momma's boys.

There was a genuine hatred between Army and Navy. We had an invitational floor hockey game that turned into a pier 6 Stampede Wrestling like brawl.
