If someone was to go and watch this plane land, what tips would you (or anyone else) have to guessing the correct runway and a good viewing spot? I can't go there today, but if this were on a different day it would be interesting to see.

Just check to see what runway other flights from the east are using in the period of time prior to arrival and make an educated guess?

I'm guessing it will come in on 35R / 17L. due to it coming from Toronto.

East arrivals as a general rule will use the new parallel runway, 17L/35R. So I'd stick with that and go to either the north or south side based on winds and what traffic around the same time is landing on.

Best bet is to have a scanner, so you can actually listen to them check in with Arrival and get their runway from them.

Or you could bookmark this facebook page for Calgary spotters:

Where no doubt an arrival like this will have quite a few people talking about it, some most likely supplying the above information as it happens so you can be in the loop.

Based on the wind outside my building right now (near Mcknight and Barlow) I would expect the 35R arrival.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, that's not my view... Just walked over to the other side of the office.

I turn into a giddy schoolgirl when I'm stuck in traffic on McKnight outside your office and the planes fly over.

The Antonov is scheduled to leave at 0900 for Gander. Current runways in use are the 35's but the forecast could see them switching to the 17's and she'd fly over the city on departure should that be the case.

For the uneducated, why does this plane have so much importance?

Not really importance, it's just a rare bird around these parts. So pretty cool to see a big four engine Ukrainian beast come to town.

We'll usually see them a handful of times in a year, often though it is overnight and dark. So I make a point of posting about it if we'll get a daylight arrival or departure.

Southwest continues the trend of painting flags on to aircraft in the theme of states in which they have large operations. Tennessee the latest:

My 5-year-old son and I were driving on Memorial yesterday when it was coming in.
Me: "Wow, look at that big airplane!"
Him: "That looks like an Antonov 124..." He takes a moment to look closer. "It IS an Antonov 124."

Somehow, I think I ended up saying the line that the 5-year-old is supposed to say, and he ended up saying the line that the dad is supposed to say. Aviation geek in the making, I think.

Well it must be Antonov week, another A124 arrived non-stop from Brazil yesterday afternoon (Rio de Janeiro), and today another one is coming up from Houston with an ETA of 1524.

How many 124s are there? I thought there were only one of each (225 and 124).

According to Wikipedia citing RussianPlanes.net there were fifty-five (55) An-124's produced

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-124_Ruslan
http://russianplanes.net/planelist/Antonov/An-124

but you are correct on the Myra An-225, there is only 1.

Only one flying 225, plus another frame sitting in the Ukraine that "could" fly if you threw enough money at it.

For the 124's there were 55 built, as of July 2013 it was reported that there were 26 in commercial service.
