I didn't know the canucks would have room on their NHL roster right now. I thought they had 5 centres up at this time?

Wow, I just read the HF thread and are Canucks fans ever having a meltdown about this one.
Seriously hilarious.
Hope Shinkaruk becomes a player, some payback for the Baertschi move.

Scoring ability is the defining skill that Hunter Shinkaruk brings to the table. Undersized and overmatched physically, Shinkaruk has that rare hockey sense that goal scorers possess with his ability to be in the right place at the right time. ... Shinkaruk’s playmaking ability is not elite, but it’s a strength of his game and something he uses to keep the defense off balance in terms of what he’s going to do. Overall, however, NHL teams will have to question how his 200-foot game translates to the NHL level at his size.

...very determined and competitive offensive player. He has very good skating ability with speed, quickness, change of pace, agility and excellent balance, which allows him to play in traffic and versus bigger players without being nullified. He's hungry to score and will pay the price to score and get to the scoring areas. He has very good hands and can beat goaltenders in a variety of ways and he is able to make those plays quickly and in tight areas.

Like this trade if for no other reason then the roster flexibility and an asset management view point.
That being said I watched him play live a few weeks ago. Was there with my son and we were paying attention to him as one of the more recognizable prospects playing in the game. Physically he was smaller height wise then most of the players but he was very "square". He was quite strong I saw him out muscle bigger players along the board on several occasions. He would also throw little hits, shoulders, elbows skating by d-men after a puck was cleared from the zone. He reminded me of Bennett the way he would cut across the ice and sort of throw himself into a body check.
The kid has pretty good vision. Playing on the half wall on power plays he often was the goto to control the puck. He made a few good cross ice passes, and was pretty good retrieving the puck after a shot from the other side. He was pressured off the puck a couple times but was kind of obvious what Utica was trying to do in the pp. He skates well, short strong strides with a good cross over power move kinda thing. His shot was quick, not sure how hard or heavy it was but he got it off quickly.
Gotta say didn't take long before you could notice him on the ice. A comparable on the flames would definatly be sam Bennett physically, but skill wise he looks more like ferland without the size. Dunno if he has top 6 potential I'm no scout but....to me he seems like the perfect 3rd line LW.

I'll take Rasmus Andersson 10 times out of 10 over Sven. Don't see the need for any payback.

I don't think anyone was talking about Shinkaruk's on-ice attitude, or how he is to play against.

What was wrong with the Baertschi trade? I would say it was fair market value for a sulking, soft underachiever who demanded a trade.

Jesus, if Weisbrod actually believes that he's the worst evaluator of talent in the world and shouldn't be anywhere near an NHL franchise.
Now I'm irrationally concerned about the Jankowski pick all of a sudden.

I sense that the modus operandi here for the Flames is that they are looking to build their upfront skill with an edge. I suspect they like what they see from Bennett in this respect and are hoping Shinkaruk can develop in a similar mode on the wing.

Treliving on why they didn't try Granlund on the wing:
tried him on wing in the minors but he wasn't comfortable playing there
thinks his hockey iq is better suited for center
when projecting him don't see him as being a true top 6 forward

Judging by listening to Treliving right now, his competitiveness is a big factor as to why he made this trade. Him and Bennett sounds like an interesting line that competes to win

I like the trade. Granlund just seems like a tweener, no idea what shinkaruk will become.
