Yes sorry for poor wording. I mean next year. Not the rest of this season

Honestly, he's only ahead because Gillies got injured for the entire season so early. Believe if Gillies was healthy he would have put up big numbers in his the AHL this year.
Matt Murray has four shutouts this season. Jon Gillies had two, in three games.

I think Murray fits more of a need but Drouin has a way higher trade value if history is any indicator. Short of top 10 NHL starters who are young, goalies rarely cost as much as front line forwards and blue chip forward prospects.
If you have a chance to get Drouin for the same return and it doesn't touch the core or any significant picks, should be done instantly.
Not saying I wouldn't like Murray too, but top AHL goalies are historically way cheaper than guys who had been drafted in the top 3 recently.
The Flames have Monahan, Gaudreau and Bennett but still need 3 more top 6 forwards in the years to come. Drouin would slot in nicely. Pick up Nylander or one of the two Finns in the draft to play RW and you are suddenly a piece away from having a young top 6 for a long time.

Murray only makes sense if he is the Flames starter next year. If he is in the AHL, he shares with Gillies (presumably). If he is penciled in as a backup, we still need to acquire a veteran goalie (presumably).
Anyone actually watch this guy? Is he ready to be a starter?

Drouin scored at about a 0.5 PPG pace in TBL on the 4th line and his value is at an all time rock-bottom.
|
And despite his value being at rock bottom he may still cost more to acquire than Murray. How do we know Drouin is a top two line LW for sure? We don't. Both prospects are slightly unknown commodities.
It's an interesting discussion but hard to evaluate when we don't know if PIT would even deal Murray or what they're asking and how much TB wants from us for Drouin.

with only 4 opportunities to do so, even if did see all his NHL appearances, it is not enough to make a decision on weather or not a starter in NHL

My point exactly.
Last year SJ took a calculated risk on Jones being a legit starter. It has worked reasonably well for them, but they had more NHL data to make that determination. Murray is far riskier for next year.

I think he's ready to be a 30ish game backup behind a veteran starter.
