Stajan for Howard is interesting if the Wings retained enough cap to even up the salaries
I doubt the Wings are retaining salary on any deal they make. They are looking to get out from underneath the contract, not pay the player to play for another team. If the Wings move Howard it will be to free themselves of his contract completely.
I think it is pointless to speculate about Howard in any form. Why would the Flames want him on their team under any circumstances?
If this season wasn't enough of a lesson about middling, past-their-prime goaltending I don't know what was.
The fact that the Flames being in on Talbot and Jones last summer and inquiring about Murray this year indicates to me that they are not looking at Howard.
I hope I am right.

That's also my sentiment. Career-wise he's been putting up Ramo-like stats, but he's being paid significantly more and with ridiculous term. And on top of that he's older. I'd stay away.

Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving: He wants badly to be active and is willing to accept he hasn’t got a playoff team this spring. Teams are calling about veteran forward Jiri Hudler, who is an unrestricted free agent, along with defenceman Kris Russell. There was talk the Flames were going to re-sign Russell but the word is the two sides aren’t close to a deal but he could fetch north of $5 million on the open market and Calgary may not pay that out. Some wonder if Treliving will be able to get a goalie at this deadline.

The word is Treliving has his work cut out for him trying to sign Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. Both are RFAs and it’s believed talks have started with both. Nobody is sure what the asking price is but the word is they’re both looking for lots in their new deals. Only Monahan is eligible for an offer sheet while Gaudreau can be signed with a bridge deal ...

People are very panicky around here, but if you examine Treliving's body of work so far, nothing leads me to believe he's not going to get this right.
He was in on Talbot, but abandoned that when he had the chance to get Hamilton. That's the right thing to do 100 times out of 100. This year, goalies of Talbot's calibre or better are once again available, but I don't see many Dougies available for the song we got ours for.
He brought Ramo back because he was the devil he knew, and he knew he couldn't role with Hiller and Ortio for 82 games. Pretty clear this was a wise decision.
Frolik was a shrewd signing - just an solid professional hockey player in all the little areas. He makes the same as David Jones. Bananas.
What are his big gaffes?
Bouma? Jury's still out, I'm inclined to give Boums the benefit of the doubt due to the injuries for this year.
Raymond? Treliving needed an NHL winger on a cheap short team deal, and Raymond had a good season with the Leafs. Raymond's a local kid. I blame Mason for this not working far more than Brad.
Engelland? Dude's the least of our worries - it's a bigger concern we have his less effective more injury prone clone in Smid tied to a contract that's harder to buy out.
If Treliving comes away from this deadline with players that address the RW and G positions I would consider it a big win. If Treliving comes away with Murray and Nichushkin he should be executive of the year. If he came away with those two I could stomach him giving up our first. This is going to be an interesting deadline. Treliving will be putting his stamp on this team between now and July 5th. Hope it works out for us.
I'd like to see Treliving to take advantage of the salary retention for some players as well. Maybe get a bit more value/make players a little more attractive for teams to trade for.
Great article in the Detroit Free Press about Howard and the Red Wings' difficult cap situation:
Quote:
Holland made two things clear: If he makes a trade, it will be for someone significant, and he is not moving goaltender Jimmy Howard, whose struggles have seen him drop to the backup job.
“I’m keeping Howard,” Holland said.
Also, the Blues placed Alexander Steen on IR for four weeks today. Possible landing place for Ladd? Maybe Hudler?
I'm hoping we can have this discussion without bringing back a looping argument, but watching the Leafs have tonight I can think of one reason you trade for Reimer instead of just waiting until July 1: Toronto might keep him.
I think they want to find a suitor for one of their goalies, but they probably don't toss away both. If they find someone to trade for Bernier, we might have competition from Toronto on July 1st for Reimer.
Toronto being our only real competition for driving the price up July 1, we could save a ton of cash trading for him.
Like I said before, there is no doubt in my mind the Leafs will re-sign Reimer. Why wouldn't they? I don't think he is available.
The Winnipeg Jets may not be shopping Andrew Ladd but we’re into semantics at this point, as GM Kevin Cheveldayoff continues to get calls on the availability of his captain. Cheveldayoff may not be doing a lot of talking but he is doing a lot of listening.
Eight days before the deadline, it’s believed at least one team has made an offer of a first-round pick plus a prospect and Cheveldayoff has a list of teams calling about the 30-year-old Ladd.
As many as six teams – Anaheim, Chicago, Florida, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Washington – are believed to have interest in him.
“You never know, with the interest this high, you might get more than a pick and a prospect. You might get a player too,” an NHL executive told TSN on Sunday. “The trick now is to not get greedy. If someone offers your price or better, now is the time to take it. The market can work in your favour and get you a high price. But it can also collapse on you.”
Cheveldayoff, either deliberately or as the result of indecision regarding the future of Ladd with his Jets, has slow-played the process.
Contenders in the Western Conference are now looking at the acquisition of Ladd by a competitor as having an impact on the competitive balance.
Chicago and Anaheim don’t want L.A. to get him, the Kings and the Ducks don’t want the Hawks to get him, and so on and so on.
