The form of England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is also encouraging to Hodgson.

"We are pleased Wayne has pulled himself out of that trough," Hodgson told BBC's Match of the Day.

Rooney went eight Premier League games without a goal, but has scored five times since the start of 2016 and Hodgson believes England's all-time leading goalscorer will have a key role to play in the summer.

Wayne Rooney has suffered a knee injury that may rule him out for at least six weeks in a major blow to Manchester United’s hopes of success this season. The club’s top scorer, who recently registered seven times in as many games, is expected to return no sooner than the start of April.

It would mean Rooney will be unavailable for a minimum of six matches, including two rounds of the Europa League, should United progress, and Monday’s trip to Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round.

Rooney, 30, will also be absent for England’s friendlies against Germany and Holland at the end of March, as the manager, Roy Hodgson, begins preparations for Euro 2016.

my guess would be 4. Kane and Rooney are locks, plus Vardy (no way he doesn't get the call after the season he's having). Fourth guy will probably be Sturridge if he's healthy ... or Welbeck (if he's healthy).

According to the Mirror, Wayne Rooney is at the centre of an incredible £100 million deal to lure him from Manchester United to China this summer. The Red Devils have reportedly received a £27m bid from an unnamed Chinese Super League club, believed to be Shanghai Shenhua, to take Rooney from England at the end of the season. The club is prepared to offer him £500,000 a week for a three-year deal to see off another Chinese club ready to enter the battle for the forward.

I dont know man, I've never been a huge Rooney fan, but how do you turn down £500K/week?

As for Balotelli? He'd wind up in some rural Chinese black-site prison before too long.

Or he'd wind up as their new Chairman.

you know, Rooney has a pretty sweet deal at United too ... probably 300k/week or even more (who knows, really), captain, seemingly the only player on the team who's really untouchable. I doubt he uproots his kids (the youngest was only born a couple months ago) to go to China of all places. Plus I don't think Rooney is one of those players who'd ever accept that he's declined and that football exile should be a viable option.

My guess is he'll stay at United for a couple more years and then have his swan song at Everton.

Right. Eventually, at some point, the extra £200K/week, if you get paid it ( apparently there are issues there) probably isnt going to be worth the aggravation and stress. Thats a good point.

It's an extra 7+ million a year, so it's nothing to scoff at, but when you're already worth 100+ ... yeah.

The potential ad money can be the only way it's truly worth it for him. But if he can make say $25+million more in ad money in China, then it becomes a chance to make like $100 million in 3 years. That's gonna be tempting no matter what.

I'm of two minds about the loss. I really thought that Spurs could make a run and had a good shot. Of course I wanted them to win and I thought that they were going to. At the same time, a late draw would almost be worse going forward. Spurs have Europa league going, and of course are in the midst of a title battle. The treble was going to make things difficult I think.
