I guess that was a poor example as Carolina is not a contender right now. My point was if you can trade Gio for another young core piece D man you do it.
How many playoff points does Gio have?

This year's team lacks real locker room guys like Grats and Spuul.

Time to dump the former Leafs and keep building.

I don`t think they`re that different. We have a lot of talent on this roster, what we`re missing is putting it all together like they did. I don`t care where we are in the standings, I think we`re only a few pieces away from the top.

Giordano / Hossa (older veteran who`s every bit a dominant player playing at an elite level)

Brodie / Keith (no-brainer, they`re the same human being. )

Hamilton / Seabrook (doesn't take a genius to point out the similarities)

Bennett / Toews (Hound-dog center with all sorts of puck skill and speed and leadership and everything else you could possibly ask for. Sammy's unproven right now, but he will be a premier center in the league)

Gaudreau / Kane (again, no-brainer)

Monahan / Sharp or Panarin (your other elite scorer, just because Panarin now replaced Sharp doesn't mean Sharp wasn't core in three different cup wins)

??? Large Right Wing / Hjalmarsson (since Giordano is a defenseman and Hossa a RW, we need a RW equivalent of Hammer value-wise.)

??? Goaltender / Crawford

Those six of eight pieces right there are all your core. I don't know where you get that RWer.

Or more accurately, you should have titled this thread "Let's talk Core, as defined by Flash Walken".

By your definition, then sure it would probably just be Brodie and Gaudreau. I wouldn't even put Bennett in there yet.

Monahan, Hamilton, and Giordano, which would be included in my definition of the Flames core, doesn't fit yours. When I think of the Flames core, I consider the core group to be the group of players that will be carrying the Flames team for the next several years, and complementary pieces are built around them.

Why is talking about a "core" useful?

Is it just listing your untouchable players?

A "core player" is someone you hope the team builds around and does everything to retain. They become the identity of the team. Suggesting a player is untouchable is not only inaccurate, but very narrow sighted. Any player can be traded, so long as it improves the hockey team or furthers the goals of the club.

In franchise history? No, Sam Bennett is not the highest drafted Flame in franchise history. Jacques Richard & Tom Lysiak are the highest drafted Flames in Franchise history. Both players were drafted 2nd overall. Bennett is highest in Calgary though.
