They've had plenty of quality guys - Sharp, Leddy, Ladd, Byfuglien, Campbell, Oduya, Frolik, come and go and never got themselves too attached. Compare that to our team, we've been attached to the likes of Matt Stajan and appear to be attached to Kris Russell and Joe Colborne.

Yeah they have a Tier 1 Core but there are a lot of mistakes they could have made every year. Compare to the Kings and their choice to not buy out Mike Richards. Or the Bruins and their inability to identify the value of Boychuk/Hamilton/Seguin. Or the Penguins, seriously the Penguins have the best player in the game, another guy with an argument for the best player in the game, a top 10 defenseman, and a good starting goalie, and yet their team is a perennial early out.
Do me a favour and rank the importance of the three reasons given above for the 'Hawks dominance.

I don't see why Hudler wouldn't be a consideration for Chicago. IIRC, he prefers LW over RW (though he plays all 3 forward positions), and is heating up nicely. I could definitely see him doing well and fitting well with Toews and Hossa.

Johnny
Monahan
Bennett
Brodie
Hamilton
Most people would consider this the core. Have to factor Gio in too. Would this core win you a Stanley Cup? It's not inconceivable but a lot of development still needs to occur. Is Monahan more than a 2nd line center? Will Bennett continue to grow and stay healthy? Hamilton has miles to go before being an elite defenseman. But you can at least see the potential.

Trading one of these guys would be ballsy but a shrewd manager would do it if he felt you could not build a championship team around them.

I'll throw this out here and I'm guessing some of you will call me crazy but I think Engelland could actually fetch quite a decent return at the deadline even with the extra year on his deal. If the club re-signs Russell and can't deal Wideman then I think Engelland makes the most sense to move as his value should be considerably higher than Smid's. While some fans may not appreciate defensive defensemen, GM's love to add that type of player at the deadline. Guys like Polak and Engelland will be the type of defenseman that certain teams are going to want to add. Especially if they are scouting the Flames right now (or last year) and seeing that Engelland as a top 4 guy actually doesn't look too bad in a pinch. He's the perfect bottom pairing guy (much like Russell) because he can be great on the bottom pairing or fill in on the top four and not be exposed. Those are great depth guys to add to contenders because they help you immediately and then a lot if injuries hit.

I think Engelland gets us a 2nd rounder or more at the deadline. I think one of Russell, Engelland and Wideman is almost guaranteed to move at the deadline. Russell could get us a lot. If they re-sign him then I think Engelland still gets us a fair amount. Ideally for cap reasons we'd deal Wideman but its a tricky contract to get rid of and may happen in the offseason if at all.

I agree but I don't think the Flames will/should sign Russell. I could see Engelland being dealt though and Smid is facing injuries so if that happened, it would clear up around 9 mil in cap space just with those 3 guys moving out.

I'm splitting "all-world core" into two separate pieces but for team construction:

1) Drafting, Prospect Trades, and Development (Hjalmarsson, Keith, Saad, Crawford, Shaw, Kruger, Leddy, Byfuglien, Gustafsson, TVR, Brouwer, the list goes on and on)

2) High-freakin' value in Keith and Hossa contracts. Closest modern day comparable for cap-shrewdness would be John Klingberg. Lightning in a bottle.

3) Management identifying core and non-core and replacing good pieces with more good pieces.

4) Two Legitimate Top 5 Draft Picks (Kane/Toews)

Yes, I believe the team around Kane/Toews has been more important than Kane/Toews. However I also don't believe the Flames have a Kane and Toews until Bennett proves it.

Now about trades.

... Engelland/Stajan/Smid/Bollig/Wideman/Raymond are all unmoveable. So yeah.

I don't think Backlund is part of the core and I"d be fine trading him. I think a few teams would actually over pay to get him and I don't think the loss of him would really hurt the team that much.

Good point. I love Backlund but where would he rank in the list of players the Hawks have ditched? Middle of the pack at best?

Not enough centremen. As much flak as Toews gets for his production, he's been the only legit top 6 centre that club has carried throughout their dynasty, other than Anisimov now. Richards was over rated, as was Bolland.

I am not going to call you crazy but I believe you are way overvaluing Engelland. At $1million/year he might fetch a late round pick. With his current contract, I don't believe he gets you anything at this year's deadline. Better off dealing him next year.

I do see the guy's value but he has been healthy scratched this year.

Agreed on all fronts. Although, Brodie's contract is only slightly less valuable, although he's more valuable as a player.

At 50% retained, maybe he's worth a late 2nd. Only if there's a complete lack of defenseman to obtain at the deadline, while there's being a whole bunch of buyers

I'm sorry, but i've never understood the Bozak love. His stats are mediocre for a first line icetime he gets and his +/- rivals the Oilers core.

Can one of you advanced staters explain why he would be such a big coup for us?

(unless he is the bad contract we must take on to acquire the player we were really after in the first place?)

True, Bob likes rushing defensemen and both Smid and Eng are stay at home. Makes sense to keep Russell on a reasonable deal, move Smid and Eng to make room for Nak/Kulak.

I am assuming Wideman gets moved or bought out.

If that happens, can we call the pairing Nakulak? Or Kulakladel?

I assure you an advanced statser could not do this. They have been using graphs with fancy colors to show how Bozak makes Kessel worse for years
