Would the Flames not simply offer to retain some of Russell's salary on any trade if the budget was that much of a concern? I think this saving cap space stuff is moot on any Flames trades of expiring contracts, we have the ability to retain salary on any deal we want to make at this deadline.

Just because the team can retain salary, doesn't mean they want to. I don't think Burke is big on retaining salary and neither are the owners. I also think you can't retain salary on more than 2 players and maybe the team thinks they can trade away a bigger contract (Wideman, Stajan) but they'd have to retain salary on those.

I agree, but what's the risk to the Flames on retaining salary on an expiring contract at the trade deadline this year? I get not wanting to retain salary in general, but it's cap space we don't need this year (assuming we are only trading for prospects or picks) and doesn't have any impact beyond this year.

Makes the game a little more exciting if you ask me. I love seeing the green guys play now that nothing is really on the line.

I'm also wondering if the cap space might be important so the team can take back a boat anchor contract or something in return. Maybe a playoff team like Tampa wants to get rid of a guy like Coburn so they can add even more salary.
I have no clue, it could be something it could be nothing. I'd be all for them retaining salary on any trade if it increases the return but that's because it's not my money

Interesting that neither of our blueline call-ups have been Kulak, who made the team out of camp.

I don't think it's that interesting, Nakladal is a pending UFA, Wotherspoon a pending RFA and both would have to clear waivers next season if sent down. So we need to evaluate what we have in these two.
Kulak is playing well in Stockton and still on Year 2 of his ELC. Even if he spends the next full year in Stockton that's only good for his development as he'll get lots of high quality minutes down there.

I have a soft spot for Wotherspoon. I thought he was really good two seasons ago when he was called up and then serviceable in the playoffs last year. I think he can be a solid 5-6 defenceman and I hope he performs well and earns a spot on the team.

Right, but would you waste your 1 out 3 salary retained contracts on a 2.6 million cap hit, that has approximately 630 thousand cap hit at the deadline, or would you rather retain salary on a 4 million or more contract that has a million or more remaining at the deadline?

Maybe the acquiring team wants to maximize cap savings by waiting till the trade deadline AND have the Flames retain salary. This allows acquiring team to maybe add another piece besides Russell at the deadline.

This only matters if you think the Flames are going to retain salary on 3 contracts this season, which is very unlikely.

Wasn't Burke one of the advocates for retaining salary in the last CBA?

I seriously hope he take this chance and runs with it. I've always had higher hopes than normal for this player. Get it done Spoon!

It would be nice to see wotherspoon come in and play solid 5th-6th minutes.
At this point, I'm not really expecting much though. He seems like he's going to be a NHL tweener.
