Default Shaw's $25 "Limited TV" package is live

They are the first to roll out their CRTC mandated $25 basic basic package. They are being a bit sneaky though in advertising it as a 40 channel package when about a third of those are SD/HD duplicates. Also comes with some bundle options to add other channels. The individual a la carte stuff has to be in place by December.

I'm a little bit surprised about this package. Based on what I watch, the plans I would need to add would still leave by bill either $10 lower or $25 lower, depending on whether a fee that appears on my bill but is discounted would still exist in the future. I'll lose out on one or two channels I like, but could always pick those up individually later when such offerings come available.

Also, a good look at how sports dominates the value of the cable packages. $25 gets you all the Canadian and American networks, while Sportsnet and TSN alone (plus the useless Golf and NFL networks that I don't care about) is $14 for the pair.

Were the CRTC guideline changes just a cap on price, so $25 max for basic local channels? I thought there was more to it.

Edit: Never mind, they've added pick & pay channels as well, which is awesome.

So We've got CBC listed 3 times, CTV 3 times, Global twice, CPAC twice, Fox twice, ABC twice, NBC twice, The Weather Network HD twice, for some reason, City twice, TVA twice, CBS twice, PBS twice, and some weird channels no one watches.

I thought that in edition to the limited channels, you would have the option of adding individual channels as you wanted or creating bundles? The more I'm looking into it, the Pick & Pay channels they have available are limited. For example, if I wanted Discovery or HGTV I'd still need to purchase the Shaw bundle as they aren't available on Pick & Pay. Does anyone know if this is something that will be changing as well?

Ya, I think the Pick and Pay had a later date to them. So they will show up eventually.

Pick and Pay isn't until the fall, only the $25 price point needed to be added for March.

It would save me $13/month (probably closer to $20/month once pick and play is introduce). Not a ton, but certainly a step in the right direction. In order for me to un-cut the cord it'd need to be far cheaper than they're able to offer.

Pick and pay is available. $3 per channel, but not every channel is offered at this point. Clearly priced to encourage bundles anyway. Why pay $3 for Encore Avenue when you can get a $6 bundle that adds four other channels?

Let me know when I can pay for only Sportsnet and TSN, and nothing else.

You can now subscribe to just TSN or just Sportsnet, according to their combos page.

Uh oh TSN.

Honestly I'd pay $25 a month just for those two channels and nothing else.

I need sports. That's it.

It will never happen. What is in the skinny package is mandated by the CRTC. They all have to offer those.

That said, if you already have an HD box, the base package and the TSN and Sportsnet packages are only $39 total.

In my dream, TSN and Sportsnet will be pay per view for like 50 cents an NFL/NHL game that sort of thing which will never happen.

There are five TSN's and even more Sportnet channels. To get all the Flames games you'd need Sportsnet West, One and Sportsnet Flames.

That's far too low when everyone isn't subsidizing it. I think the flames lost money running PPV at like $8 per game.

And CBC. Potentially City as well.

Those come in the basic package though, not so bad. Unless I'm wrong anyone thinking they just have to pay for one Sportsnet and one TSN are wrong.
