Default Francis: Gaudreau and Flames will start contract talks

per Francis

Gaudreau's agent is in town.

He said he believes this will be the biggest contract the Flames will ever sign. They will use Tarasenko's contract as a framework

Hopefully we lockup Gaudreau for the long term.

The framework for what will undoubtedly be the biggest contract in Calgary Flames history will likely start to be drawn up this week as Johnny Gaudreau’s agent is in town.

The Calgary Sun has learned Gaudreau’s New York-based representative, Lewis Gross, is in Calgary to visit with the talented winger who will be a restricted free agent this summer.

Flames GM Brad Treliving refuses to comment on the nature and progress of any contract talks but did acknowledge he and Gross would likely have coffee.

“It’s good to have him out here to sit down and chat about things and what will happen next year,” said Gaudreau, who insists he and Gross haven’t discussed numbers much at all this NHL season.

“Honestly, we haven’t talked about (the contract) much, but now that he’s out here, it might come up a little more now. We’ve been kind of struggling on the ice lately, so we haven’t been worrying about it too much because we’re trying to hop back up in the standings.”
Quote:
“(A new contract) is just something to get out of the way,” said the 22-year-old Jersey boy who leads the Flames with 22 goals and 32 assists in 54 games.

“Whatever is best for the Flames and whatever is best for us, we’ll come to an agreement and we’ll figure something out.”
Quote:
Either way, Gaudreau downplays the visit, pointing out he has some appearances to make for Pizza 73 that Gross is here to help him with. And while Gaudreau’s focus is squarely on hockey, there’s little doubt he’ll have time to discuss his thoughts on the potential deal.

“Right now is probably not the best time,” admitted Gaudreau of the contract talk timing.

“The trade deadline is coming up, and we’re trying to fight for a playoff spot, and it’s a difficult time to be worrying about something like that when you have the rest of the season after trade deadline and the summer. We’ll see what happens, but I’m excited to have my agent here and talk to him a bit.”

Wasn't it reported from the season ticket holder's meeting that the Flames like the bridge contract?

Yep, but thanks to the tards up north, they're not as common any more. RFAs are more willing to ask for the world at an earlier point in their careers.

I don't think a bridge deal is going to fly...he's by far the Flames best player.

Give him the Tarasenko contract and call it a day.

Need to get 8 years but I get the feeling it will be 6

Everybody has to keep in perspective that Eric Francis doesn't add any insight ever. He's molded in the Trump style of human being. It's up to us to stop feeding him clicks so eventually he goes away.

With that said...Gaudreau contract talks should be a big deal. Who are the comparables? Tarasenko is a good starting point.

The agent coming into town to help with the Pizza 73 endorsement? Sure.

I am guessing JG stays here until UFA status, then he's moving closer to home.
