It is time to start moving some UFAs NOW before any more get injured.
A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. An injured Russell or Hudler is worthless to this Flames team.

I think it was Pinder on the Fan who said yesterday Hiller is the worst goalie in the league with 12+ starts. He's a backup goalie who can give you the San Jose moments.

Wow, I hope that's just the laid back Finnish attitude. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. I thought we had been getting pretty good goaltending from Ramo lately, despite the uninformed national media saying that the Flames needed to solve their goaltending issue.
You look at his numbers since he came back and he would be in the top half of the league in GAA and save %, probably top 10. He had a terrible start, which shouldn't happen, but it was clearly a positioning thing that was easily corrected. He looked like he was losing his net earlier in the year.
I am fine if they re-sign him, and depending on what is available, it may be the best option...in which case then I guess Ramo's comments makes sense if he knows that he may be the best FA available.

If you're saying the Flames don't have a goaltending issue, you're the one who's uninformed.

There is the potential this injury ends his Flames career, even if the team otherwise wanted to bring him back.

I'd be interested in signing Ramo as a back up. Discount price of course, maybe with a performance for games played built in as well.

The Flames pay Karri Ramo close to 4 mil, not an AHL backup.
Unless you're insinuating that Ramo is an AHL backup, in which case you are grossly misinformed.

Start him in the AHL where he can back up Gillies and the Flames can start next season with a new #1 and likely Poulin backing him up.

I'm not saying you leave him in the AHL all year, you give him some starts/practices and when he's healthy bring him back up. I was going off the idea that he may not be healthy to start the year.

Ramo injury may scare other teams off signing him - could be a situation where he stays a Flame on a 1 year "show-me" deal again so he can hopefully parlay that into a longer deal. it would take a crazy GM to offer multiple years to a goalie with consistency issues coming off major surgery.
Sucks for Ramo, as a good end to the year could have got him that multi-year deal. Hope he recovers well and can have a few more years in the NHL, be it here or in the Eastern conference

Yeah. Seems like a good dude and all and I hope a team other than the Flames gives him an opportunity to continue his career. He's still young enough to bounce back and have at least a career as a backup.

I feel bad for Ramo, but this should mean no Ramo or Hiller next season for the Flames. Which is great in my opinion, time for a fresh start in net for the Flames.

He has since proven to be a capable goaltender in this league.
Considering how poor his start was, his numbers since have been impressive.

I don't think Ramo was ever going to be an option for the Flames in the offseason. This season and last have been akin to the old Trevor Kidd and Rick Tabaracci days of the 90's where the team continued to make the mistake of going with them because of brief glimmers of good play surrounded by a lot of mediocrity and poor play. I believe the Flames plans are clean slate on this one regardless of this injury. Hartley probably deserves this at the very least if they are going to give him another season.

In thinking about it, if the Ramo injury is this serious and he is not healthy for training camp, they guy probably doesn't get an NHL contract from anyone.
If a KHL or European team offers him a guaranteed contract, that may be Ramo's best option for next year.
Unless the Flames nab an elite NHL goalie which would be highly unlikely the team will need 2 capable goalies at the start of the year. So seems pretty likely we see 2 new goalies next year.
