Tooth decay in children in Calgary has worsened since the city stopped adding fluoride to drinking water in 2011, according to a new study.

So glad we decide policy on mommy instinct instead of science. Hooray quacks!

This is an actual study that shows it as opposed to anecdotal evidence. For all the pro floride stuff out there the number of studies with good control groups was quite limited.

Why is it the Cities role to regulate this. Cities really don't have the capability to make good policy in scientific fields. Really the province / feds should be including this in their mandatory water treatment requirements.

OK so if you believe so strongly that it's imperative for you and your kids to ingest fluoride that's great, feel absolutely 100% free to fluoridate your own water. It's your right, nobody is stopping you.

Don't ask me to pay for it, I've never had a cavity and take care of my teeth. Don't care if you don't. This isn't the vaxxer argument, you can't hate shame anyone here.

The cost was negligible, and it is vaxxeresque to worry about consuming tiny amounts of fluoride.

Thankfully, our society got this far by moving past opinions like this.

If the cost is so negligible do it yourself. What right do you or the government have to say what must go into people's body? With vaccines you have a logical foundation that it poses a public health risk, drawing parallels is simply a matter of convenience for those unwilling to fluoridate their water.

A $20 bottle of fluoride should last you nearly a year, that's pretty negligible. An hour of work, have at it.

Weakest rhetoric around, this isn't even an argument. I want sovereignty over my body and what goes in it, that you guys think that's insane really shows how far out of touch you are. Fluoridate your own water if it's so important, you have the freewill, I'd like to keep mine.

See its not for you. Water fluoridation is about social equity. It's the poor kids with poor diets and poor dental hygiene that see the most dental decay.

I do agree that funding for it should come from Health Canada or the Provincial Health departments. The cost benefit is there, but the money comes from different pockets.

ACGold, do you think that we should be adding chlorine to our water supply? Or do you think the individual should be responsible for purifying his water as well?

Good question.

As it is a larger public health risk not to the necessity forces us to sterilize the water. That's the key difference, I had a friend that worked in the water treatment plant. All of the other additives were imperative in creating potable water that will not make people sick, the only chemical that was the exception was fluoride.

Ideally you filter your own water completely then remineralize and alkalize it, that water tastes so good.

Wait, wait. Research shows that adding fluoride also keeps people from getting sick.

Funny timing for this article, just came back from the dentist for a filling. Never had a cavity before in 37 years.

No one said you have to drink the City's water. If you're not interested in taking in fluoride, just don't, get your own water. The fluoride is there as a public good for the good of the masses. If it doesn't work for you, use your own water supply.

Good point. The water supply is pay per use, after all, at least according to my last utility bill. If people don't like it then they can buy water from other sources; it's not like they are paying twice

It's not scientific, but I tend to look at the Flouride arguement by who's making money. It always seems to be the bottled water, water filter salesmen, etc spouting off how bad flouride is.

The fact dentists, who make money fixing cavities, are willing to support it also gives me comfort.

I also believe that people who are against flouride take in way more of it than they think, and it's not really the cause of their health issues.

But what do I know, I'm just a mechanic. lol

On this note, where the hell do I buy ingestible fluoride? Even with my Google skills I'm having trouble finding anything but "Fluoride Free!" hippie bull#### toothpaste and some fluoride mouthwash.

why the hell does this even matter? there's fluoride in toothpaste. there is no need for it in water. issue seems to be poor dental hygiene.

Do you brush your teeth as much as you drink water?
