Spurs come away with a big win today. They're sitting second just a couple behind Leicester at this point, and the finish should be exciting.

But you agree it was nowhere close to being a penalty. Yes?

It was obviously close, hence the call from the ref. I'm so happy Spurs won! When Lamela fed that ball through to Eriksen and he slotted it home I was thrilled. Regardless of this winds up Tottenham has looked really good in general this year. Their goal differential is far and away the class of the Premiership, and while there are some tough games to come, I think that they will finish in the top four. Can they win the whole thing? Of course. A win against Swansea in a couple weeks followed by a battering of Woolwich a week later would be a start!

It wasn't close. Replays show that it clearly hit him in the back.

Well you know how this goes. The ref doesn't get the benefit of replays, and Sterling flapped his arm out. It was close because the ref obviously thought it was a handball and his only decision to make was whether he was in the box.

nope, but Sterling was dumb enough to turn his back and raise his arm

if I was a City fan id be more mad at him than the ref

He never saw the contact. If by thought you meant guessed, then agreed.

Quote:
Mark Clattenburg is the best referee in the Premier League but I'm afraid he broke the golden rule of officiating when he gave Tottenham Hotspur a penalty. The golden rule is that if something happens and you don't see it, that's life.
But you cannot, MUST not, give something that you thought had happened.

Watching live as Danny Rose's cross hit Raheem Sterling, it just looked wrong.
And replays proved that the ball simply struck Sterling on the back.
The only conclusion can be that Clattenburg guessed it had hit Sterling on the arm.
Any argument of whether it was inside the box was irrelevant.
It just wasn't handball and Clattenburg was wrong.
Even if the ball had hit Sterling's arm, it shouldn't have been a penalty because he had turned his head and wasn't looking at the ball, therefore it can't have been deliberate.
Tottenham might win the League as a result of the referee's mistake

Look. Congrats on a big win but neutrals see it that you benefited from a arbitrary, very fortuitous call that wasn't even close based on nothing more than a guess. That's all. And I apologize for making people listen to Carragher's voice..

yeah the ref can't give that. if it had hit him in the elbow then the elbow is blocking space. But the armpit? i don't think so.

just because you turn your head doesnt mean your arm was out and doesn't mean it was a penalty, might be the dumbest thing ive ever heard a ref say, although Graham did hand out 3 yellows in the same game to one player so I shouldnt be surprised

To say a team might win the league as a result of a referee's mistake is the most clickbait sentence ive ever seen, you could go through the 38 game season for every team and find calls gone for them and against that changed how the points were allotted that day

I'll chime in, I initially thought it was a ridiculous penalty call, then I saw a replay from the other side of the field so you see Sterling (because he was facing the wrong way) and it looks like he sticks his arm out.

If he doesnt do that then he doesnt impede the cross, but I have no idea how the hell the referee could have possibly seen that and even then, iffy call.

At the end of the day though, Sterling pounds a heavy shot at point blank range and Danny Rose takes it full-on, that shows courage, Sterling couldnt face a cross?

I thought Danny Rose was immense in that match.

Schalke defender Joel Matip joins Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer. Nice one for the Scousers, should help their defense a lot. Sucks for Schalke that they don't get anything for their top centre back.

That does suck for Schalke, and I dont really know enough about Matip to know what we're getting but a young, experienced Cameroon international? For free? Cant go wrong with that.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that 'really wanting to play in the Premier League' translates to 'unmatchable wages.'

Its funny because I literally typed that same though about Rose and Sterling last night and deleted it. I mean its easy to say sitting on the couch that Sterling should man up and eat that, but I'm way too gun shy to do that myself.

I do agree with Diane Phaneuf though. Should that have been a penalty? Maybe, maybe not. The fact is Spurs played a great game though, and they were worthy of a win. City has some issues I think. Clearly they're not motivated and aren't playing for each other at all, despite their position on the table.

And of course every team gets these calls for/against them through a season. Even in the same game yesterday it was unreal how many tackles Toure got away with and had no card. I mean Arsenal scraped by Leicester in what was certainly a questionable yellow/red. That was easily as ridiculous. That was a foul, sure, but hardly anyone would think that was a yellow. That's part of the game though; all of the calls aren't going your way for a season, and not all of the calls are going to be right.

Easily, easily Toure could have been off after 15 minutes or at least had to play most of the game on a caution.

The red card to Leicester was harsh, probably a final warning would have suffice. But Drinkwater probably should have gotten a straight red for his tackle on Ramsey. Didn't even get a yellow!

So...what you're saying is that these kinds of things tend to even out?

Like the fact that this was the first penalty City have conceded all season?

not that all things even out just that Leicester doesn't really have a beef, that was a rough and physical game and calls can go either way.

I know, we're just talking about two totally different games.

He's been great so far this year, he should be on the England team this summer, has been much better than Baines and Gibbs
