Edmonton radio speculating Schultz to Vancouver with Edler injured.

Best case scenario for Flames fans if the Oilers do end up moving him?

Oh, for another PO series against them!

Jim Benning for GM of the Year Award.

(why trade for him? So odd)

Classic Benning. Trade for a player under 25 who used to have potential to be good. #Canucksrebuild

I suppose so; I guess he goes for the "discount bin", so that you hope that you strike gold eventually and cheaply...

But Justin Schultz? Really?

Olli nearing 40 was still a better player then David Jones. Can't believe some people (not you) have suggested re-signing him.

Jones has had some good stretches, but even at 1.2 million left on his contact come deadline day, he's still going to be hard to move. Not a lot of teams with 2 million in space for a 3rd liner. Unless a team is really hurting for a right hander.

The Flames will have their choice of teams to move Jones to. He's a big body on an expiring contract who had a heck of a playoff run last year.

A playoff team looking to add another big body on their wings will pay for him. The return might be a late 3rd or late 2nd, but it will be there.

I could see the Flames trading Jones and their 3rd for the other team's 2nd.

I am anxiously waiting for Brad 'heavy hockey' Treliving to start actually bringing in players that are bigger and more tough to play against.

With Edler out I bet the Canucks have called the Flames about Russell.Russell played for Willie Desjardins when he was with the Medicine Hat Tigers and was named the WHL Player of the Year, while also capturing the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the WHL's Defenceman of the Year. The Canucks seem to have alot of interest in players that were successful under Willie such as Vey/Dorsett/Etem so i wouldnt be shocked if they went hard after Russell. What they would be willing to give up would be another story but i would think they would have alot more interest in Russell then Schultz.

From Aaron Portzline at the Columbus Dispatch:

The Red Wings had much brass in the building on Tuesday to watch the Blue Jackets play the Islanders in Nationwide. GM Ken Holland was there, along with special assistant to the GM Kris Draper, and pro scout Kirk Maltby. It's believed the Red Wings were taking a close look at Fedor Tyutin, who is likely to be dealt by the Feb. 29 trade deadline.

He has!

Derek Grant / Drew Shore / Hunter Smith / Auston Carroll / Adam Ollas-Mattsson / Freddie Hamilton / Jakub Nakladal

the Stckton Heat have definitely gotten bigger and more tough to play against.

In my opinion if the Flames don't re-sign Russell he will be a Canuck on July 1 if Willie is still behind the bench. They have a huge need for. Dman and for all the reasons you stated above there is a fit.

It's easier said than done to add size that can actually play in the new NHL.

It's kind of funny how it shifted - seems like every team has lots of small skilled tweener forwards that can play in their bottom 6 - but much harder to find guys with size who can actually skate well enough to play in your bottom 6.

Big guys that can actually skate and play a shift in the NHL are the hardest thing for a team to acquire, for both forwards and defenseman. Hard to get and in order to get them you will be drafting and developing them.

Ottawa maybe reported as the front runner for Jonathan Drouin.

Would you guys swap Dennis Wideman for Ryan Miller (One Year / $6M remaining)? It seems like a trade that makes sense for us as it gets money away from our bottom pair and into net, and with the Canucks likely losing Hamhuis and ready to go all-in on Markstrom, it might work for them too. Miller's not great but he does have a .916 this year so he's not horrible either. We're not taking on any extra term, so we can spend Miller's expiring (along with Smid, Engelland, Raymond) on a goalie in 2017. Plus it opens up cap space to bring back Hudler or an alternative (Eriksson / Okposo)

Miller is a poor stop gap goalie who costs more than Wideman. Bad trade for the Flames IMO
