Flames beat the Leafs 4-3
Ooooo it's a doozy on Overtime tonight with Robert going off about the team's decision to sit the kids

Meh - Flames pulled out a win. That's what counts. First two periods were really good, third not so much.
I thought Backlund continued on his streak of strong games. Count me in as someone that would hate to see him being moved. He seems so much more persistent on the puck and is winning key battles much more regularly.
Man, is Kadri ever still a little pukey punk. I do wonder if the NHL will do anything about his 'cut-throat' motions. It is actually players like these that I never mind seeing leveled every odd game. He kept his head down and got stood up hard, and then cries like a baby. I remember years ago when he got sent down and the Toronto Sun posted up that pic trying to draw a reaction - never thought they were foreshadowing the punk he is:

"Top 4 Defenseman Kris Russell", "Left Winger Sam Bennett, "Powerplay Superstar Dennis Wideman", "D-Zone Panic Attack Markus Granlund", "D-Zone Heart Attack Deryk Engelland". This is gonna be a tough season to swallow down the road, barring some miraculous undefeated streak.

It's a tough situation with few right answers. I remember a lot of people feeling the same way in the season when the Flames dealt Iginla and Bouwmeester and that tanking was the way to go. Instead they played hard down the stretch and ended up picking 6th and arguably got the best player in the draft through pure luck (Monahan). Then the Flames played their all in 2013-2014 and finished 4th instead of tanking all out and ended up with either the best or 2nd best player in the draft (Draisaitl is almost a year older than Bennett).
Even if the Flames do go on a winning streak but fall short of the playoffs, they will still end up with a really good player. There isn't a huge drop off in talent from #4 to #10 and I doubt the Flames will make a run that's bigger than that otherwise they may just make the playoffs because the difference from picking 10th to 15th overall is 2 points right now.
A player like Sergachev, Juolevi, Dubois, McLeod, Gauthier, or Bean would be a good add and they are the likely 7th-12th OV picks. It's a surprisingly decent draft in terms of depth of quality. Obviously either of the Finns, Chychrun, Nylander, Tkachuk or Matthews would be awesome, but it isn't the end of the world even though it would be the preferred outcome after the disappointment of the first half of the season.

I think he would have... if Smid hadn't completely blown that two on one and helped the score get closer. I wish Bob had given Nakladal something of a chance though.
As far as the third period goes, just another reminder that the turtle defence doesn't lead to good things. We held on though.

Yeah, I though Smid Eng looked like a solid pair until last night. They were pinned for a solid two minutes at one point. Lucky they were playing the Leafs, a better team would have capitalized even more.
Also, why is Colborne regressing? Seems like he is worse every game he plays.

Colborne's problem is that he just isn't that good. At this point, he's basically filler until someone better comes along.

Don't disagree, but I thought he was pretty good last night. Ferland's goal was largely him, and he backchecked pretty hard all game.

He also had a bunch of soft passes and clearing attempts that didn't work

Colborne doesn't have the hockey IQ to keep up with his hands and isn't quick enough to play the game he wants to play. And he can't consistently play the forechecking game that he needs to be playing.
He's always just almost there. Some nights everything is right with his game, but he's usually terrible against bigger, better teams.

Didn't notice those over any one else's poor play in the second half of the game. I did notice Hartley sent him out solely for FOs a bunch of times after the Flames were getting killed in the circle.

Oh everyone was poor last night. Flames were lucky to win that one. Colborne want that good by my eye, but I suppose it's been colored a bit

He has moments, and I like him from an effort perspective.
But he is one of those guys who will fall by the wayside as the talent level increases.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Colborne has been asked to do/be everything and play with everyone. If they gave him an extended stay in one role, he might have the opportunity to settle into it a bit better?
1L RW/LW, 3L RW/LW, 4L RW/C/LW
That's pretty much been his life as a Flame since he came here. Its more likely we've seen the best he can offer, and he won't put it together but I'd at least like to see him stick to a role for 10 games or more and see what becomes of it. Worst case scenario, you improve he trade value somewhat.

I don't disagree he's better than anyone else in that role right now , but that along with Russell/Wideman, etc is why the team is where they are. We need better pieces there so don't go keeping these guys for 4 or 5 years. That's dumb

Except the problem he makes mistakes that aren't role related.
If he's giving up the puck behind the net or passing it to nobody all of the time, his ice time or responsibilities don't really matter. It's just that he's not very good.
Sucks for him.
