Both of those make no sense to me.

Not sure how they could swing it, but that would be a crazy top 4 on the back end.
Giordano - Brodie
Hamilton - Shattenkirk
Engelland - Smid

I think the rumour was the Shat for Drouin and something else from TBL.
So it seems like Flames would have to give up something substantial if they wanted him.
I really like the d core as it is today. Losing Wideman is a case of addition by subtraction.
Smid and Eng are solid. Russell paired with any one of the top three is fine.

Hearing lots of Dion Phaneuf trade chatter. Starting to think he could actually be dealt before the deadline.

who in their right mind would take Phaneuf short of significant salary retention that I really don't see Toronto committing to for the next 5 years?

They already committed to 5 years of salary retention on Kessel, why not Phaneuf?

Not sure but, it's sort of gone under the radar that Phaneuf has wanted out for a while now. Back last spring after the trade deadline Friedman said on the Fan 960 that Phaneuf was devastated he wasn't traded. Wanted to go to a contender

Dion (with $2M retained by Leafs) for Wideman & Raymond...I would be down with that. I would also throw in Bollig.

Then that means Toronto will have an even larger cap penalty for the next 5 seasons, which could be equivalent to $4 million (if not more) that severely handicaps them if they ever want to compete within that timeframe.

It would be fun to see what hoops Lombardi would jump through to get rid of Phaneuf after half a season

I assume Phaneuf has a NMC. So if he wants a contender, he would be able to veto an Oiler trade.
