Burke was right. Rielly is the best from 2012'.
If not for Rielly's injury the year leading to the draft, he easily would have been picked higher.

Assuming we're drafting that high, is anyone else really hoping we stay clear of Laine?

The stories of his personality issues are pretty terrifying. We have a really good group in Calgary now, and someone like Puljujärvi sounds to be a perfect fit.
Pretty late to answer to this, but I think this deserves a better answer.

There have indeed been stories about Lainees attitude in Finland, but this was almost purely back in 2014, during the Ivan Hlinka memorial tournament. Finland was down a goal late in the game, and Laine got so upset about not being put on the ice that he gave the head coach the finger and shouted something about killing the coach for not putting him on the ice. He was also possibly looking to attack the head coach, but his team mates stopped him before he could reach him. He did play in the next game, but was sent home after that. (Possibly there was some other minor incident, the coaches comments on the topic are very vague.)

There are however several reasons why this doesn't give me any worry at this point.

1) Laine is the first to admit that he used to have some issues, and openly admits that he brought "his reputation" on himself.

2) Laines problem was mostly his inability to control his desire to win and be the best. Sometimes that boiled over. He's not lazy, and not a dressing room problem. Both Jukka Jalonen (the head coach of the latest U20 gold medal team) and Jussi Tapola (head coach of his current team Tappara) have spoken strongly in favour of his character, and both praise his will to win. The coach he threatened (Mika Marttila) has given some very positive comments about Laines growth since that incident.

3) His reputation for being a "problem player" was earned when he was 16. He has worked with a personal sports psychologist for years (even before 2014), and by all accounts it's been working.

4) Finland is a country where strong personalities are easily frowned upon, especially in sports. (It's an often admitted problem.) It's also a very small country, so it's pretty easy for stuff like this to get blown out of proportion.

They have more than enough assets to trade up. They are loaded with prospects at every position but goaltender. This is a team on a great trajectory, and adding a star like Matthews would make them a team to watch in the very near future.

To add to the above:

I actually really like Laines ability to combine aggression with clean play. Zero penalty minutes this season in Tappara for a player that was previously considered a hothead.

Can posters be banned for posting OT too much? I feel like that is a thing that should happen.

No they won't. It depends on where they finish but lets say they are drafting outside the top 5. All of the sudden the price to move up to #1 becomes OEL. No way do the Yotes do that deal.

They are #1 in prospects, but it'll be an insane price to move up. I can't see Columbus/Toronto/Montreal/Buffalo doing the deal. #1 picks just Are not moved anymore.

What makes you so sure?

The cost would be something along the lines of Domi, Duclair, OEL, + 2017 1st rounder. Not a chance do I see ARZ making that trade.

Edmonton would naturally match anything McDavid receives, but think what would happen if the Flames offered 7/$75M.

If it works, we get Connor McDavid. If it doesn't work, we still make Edmonton pay McDavid VASTLY more than they want.

I'm all for this.

Yeah, this thread is the 2016 Draft thread. Let's keep it on track please.

There's a lot of crap filling up most of the threads at the top of this page, and weirdly it's all about McDavid or the Oilers, or the Leafs in each of them and it's super annoying. Y'all complain that TSN, Sportsnet, etc yap on about these things incessantly, then practically the same garbage trashes up everything else from the posters around here.

You forgot the other add OEL! OEL is the cap dump in this trade lol!If we win the lottery and this is the offer I think we should ask for more, given OEL's contract. Maybe if they retain 50 percent it would be fair. I have not learned how to use green text, apparently that poster did not know how either!

Put Hall in Boston and then on this Dallas team the last few years and I bet he would have slightly better stats then a Tyler Seguin who was a Oiler. Hindsight is 20/20 but picking Hall over Seguin was hardly a huge blunder.

Edit-Didn't realize so many commented that this was not a bad drafting decision.
I don't think taking Hall was bad drafting - it was a perfectly defensible decision. However, the weaknesses that he has as an NHLer were apparent as a junior player, and that is why some (including me) had Seguin ranked higher heading into the draft.
I didn't like Hall as a junior for the same reasons I don't like him now. He's a puck hog, doesn't make those around him better, is not a two way player and generally is a dummy.
Or to state more concisely: Derp.

How much better is Matthews over Laine? Would you want Bennett or Matthews as a full-time LW over Laine at RW? If Matthews is head-and-shoulders the BPA, then sure, but if it's close, I'd take Laine with the first pick.
