pick him up and move Russell out if there is a decent offer for him.

Different is not a synonym of better.
Besides, if you're moving Russell out, you're probably doing it to open a spot for one of your farmhands. Picking up a guy who can't even stick with Vancouver and is about to become a UFA is just a waste.

Well presumably the Canucks are still somewhat incensed in regards to the very obvious league conspiracy against them ever winning the cup so they signed Webber in order to combat the league by having him level Don Henderson.
If you think about it logically and objectively it all makes perfect sense.

didn't say he was better.
similar + a draft pick is better than staying the same and not getting a draft pick IMO

You're presenting a false dichotomy. And grabbing a useless player for no good reason is not the better scenario.
Also, if we take at face value the argument that Weber = Russell, the fact that Weber can be had for nothing should indicate to you what the market for Russell is in your scenario.

Explains those money wires to Wideman on the books too.

I also didn't state that they were equal.
I said to grab Weber if there is anything on the table for Russell- as Russell is the only d-man that I am comfortable parting with that also potentially has value around the league.
I wouldn't want to see Brodie, Gio or Hamilton moved right now. And I dont believe that Wideman, Smid or Engelland hold any value around the league at this point.
