There seems to be a lot more trade rumours and pro scout visits lately in the NHL.

Good.

Maybe the Caps want Russell and the Flames want to get a better look at whoever is being offered.

If he and the top line can go on a roll for the next 5 to 10 games, and he shows that he is still the player that he was last year now that he's healthy, I would think his value would rise a fair bit - to maybe a 2nd and a good prospect or something like that.
If he's now back to his former self, do you try and offer him a contract rather than trading him?

Probably time to cut bait and get the highest return you can. From todays tweets from the big media talking heads, it appears it is over for the Flames and Hudler.

If you can risk taking his trade all the way to the deadline, the return might be much better than anyone anticipated if he can show he's still got a bit of last year left in him. Then again his groin may go for the season in the time too.

Either way, cut bait and move on.

I don't see them going 9-2-1 or anything but even if they did and Hudler is on fire it shouldn't change management thinking. It is pure asset management and a basic move for a rebuilding team. They need to continue the process.

100% trade him IMO. He's got injury troubles, his skating is worse this year. He may bounce back but at his age and where we are I don't think its a good gamble. He was awesome here but I think its done.

We should supplement the young core with additions like Frolik. At the right time Treliving can always trade picks/prospects for veteran scoring help as well. I don't see Hudler as a long term fit with what we're doing.

Guys like him don't grow on trees. Does anyone see Poirier, Klimchuk etc becoming a natural 55-60+ point guy? I don't. Nor do I want Bennett playing wing long term. Our best bet is Granlund panning out as a winger, and that's no guaruntee. If Hudler gets hot, we should still trade him for a first, because I'm sure there'll be a good player available, especially some USHL type guy (Keifer Bellows?) or a riser like Pascal Laberge. But if you're talking about Hudler for a late second.... not sure the depth in the draft is worth it to burn bridges with Hudler.

Was Hudler just kidding when he said "I'm about 45%" during his interview last night?

How many teams are going to be interested after a medical takes place?

Asset management is a long-term decision, not a "how is he playing today?" decision.

It sounds like the team is thinking that he isn't in the long term plans (and I agree with them).

So the only thing his play changes is the potential return.

You bet he was kidding. But Roger wasn't biting. Then he finished the interview by stick tapping Roger on the butt. Millions no sold that too.

This is true. Before last year there was promising depth on the wings. But seeing as how Colborne has gone stagnant, Poirer and Klimchuck has regressed, and Granlund has gone stagnant.

If the Flames could trade for high end prospects, that could improve their chances of improving their weak top 6 winger position.

i think it was in the drouin thread where some gm said that everyone is going to be at this game...

wouldn't be surprised if every teams scout was at every game played...

Well to be fair to Klimchuk hasn't exactly played pro before so I don't think you can state he regressed, Poirier maybe but still growing pains are to be expected. Not saying it should change our focus at the draft but until I see some of these guys up in the bigs I'm going to reserve judgement.

Poirier has been playing like himself since December. He was making adjustments in the early part of the season and has applied them effectively. Klimchuk was being used in a 3rd/4th line defensive role and is now being used in a more offensive role now. Both are playing really well.

I think it changes things a little. During the 2013 draft, the Flames drafted an entire line of forwards in the first round (LW, C, RW). This crop was going to build upon forwards already in the system, as well as forwards traded for (ie, Agostino, Arnold, Gaudreau, Granlund, and Jankowski). Bennett has since been added to mix, but ultimately, if the majority of these guys don't pan out, then the Flames can't draft another group to join them when it's too late, they need to find guys who will hit their prime when Gaudreau, Monahan and Bennett do.

I would go hard after Drouin personally. Add a guy like Laine in the draft. Now you have a core of Gaudreau, Monahan, Laine, Drouin, and Bennett all hitting their primes fairly close together.
