Filip Kuba would have looked great on the Flame blueline instead of Minnesota's.
Not really the point that was being made though.

At the time, he was deemed expendable. The Flames probably protected other guys they shouldn't have instead. They had pissed poor management at the time, go figure.
Sorry, what was your point? You made it sound like every expansion draft results in the existing teams losing good players, but that hasn't historically been the case.

I get that the McDavid jokes sometimes write themselves, but are we really laughing at something like this?
Gaudreau
Monahan
Brodie
Hamilton
Bennett
This #$#@ isn't all that funny to me.

Honestly if we lose a player of that magnitude, I'd be done with the NHL. Could you imagine an expansion team stacked with youth like that while we toil another five years trying to replace our losses.

We can joke about McDavid - but what if Johnny Gaudreau or Sam Bennett was exposed - no one n Calgary would find that funny.

Like I said in the thread about the proposed battle for the final wildcard spot. I hate everything the NHL is doing these days. These things they are proposing and implementing have the potential to cripple franchises.

Management decided ancient veteran Tommy Albelin was more valuable. Waste of a great trade when Coates dealt Rocky Thompson for Filip Kuba. Kuba had a nice career.
I can't imagine teams losing top young players would ever fly.

If a new owner is paying $.5B for a team, I imagine he'll want some special treatment.

Yeah, it's called the 1st overall pick. Maybe even 2 years in a row, that would be more than fair.

So really, the Flames could protect 0 goalies, 7 D, 11 F.
Excellent Smithers.

If it's all the players and you can only protect 1 5 9
1 G - Gillies
5 D - Gio Brodie Hamilton Kylington Andersson
9 F - Monahan Gaudreau Bennett Frolik Poirier Klimchuk Jankowski Granlund Backlund

No Ferland and Bouma?
1 G - Gillies
5 D - Gio, Brodie, Hamilton, Kylington, Andersson
9 F - Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Frolik, Jankowski, Backlund, Bouma, Ferland, Poirier
One of Kylington, Andersson and Poirier would be replaced by our 1st rounder this year.

I wonder what would happen with guys with NMCs? Presumably the union would not allow those guys to be claimed. If that happened, a guy like Gio might not have to be protected. Could add a whole new element to all this, one that makes NMCs an asset rather than a liability.
Knowing the NHL, they would probably make the NMC players take up a spot, even if they are undesirable assets.

I can see it now, 29 teams approve, Edmonton rejects.

Was reported months ago that the NHL's interpretation is that a NMC does not protect a player from an expansion draft. The PA is likely going to challenge that on behalf all their members with NMCs.

I'm guessing that is close to what it will be as well. All players in an organization will be exposed. If so there will be a lot of good players available.
I don't have a huge issue with it. If the league is going to make the leap into a market like Vegas the last thing they'll want is a bottom feeder for 5-10 years. They'll want to make that franchise at least respectable right out of the gate.

Yeah, but Bettman is saying he wants these expansion teams to be more competitive right off the hop. If that's the case, we might be looking at something like:
1 G
4 D
6 F
And that makes decisions a lot tougher.
