Obviously I'm biased...but I just find hockey to be a superior sport to the "American Past-time" that is the MLB. Case in point...the Yankees broke out the champaign after a LOSS to clinch the division title. SIX TEAMS win a division in baseball. Last I checked, hockey players only celebrate ONE THING this hard and that's the Stanley Friggin Cup:

Oh...and on top of that:
-Steriods
-Baseball wimps who skip a game because they had to play the previous night (aka Manny Ramirez). Would like to see those chumps try and play NHL hockey on back-to-back nights
-Guys like Ryan Smyth who come back to assist on a playoff OT winner after having the majority of their front-teeth knocked out by a flying puck
-hockey fights compared to baseball "hissy-fits" when a batter charges the mound.

Baseball is great for lots of reasons...so is hockey.

The baseball vs insert sport here debate is old and tiresome.

They are different sports, played at different times of the year I don't see much point in comparing them against each other. I like both

I like Hockey much better. Faster and more exciting. I love to play baseball but I can't stand to watch it. Kind of like Curling.

lol this thread is absurd.

Its like we have to pick one sport over the other.

Which is better? Pizza or steak? Both are foods...lets fight over which one is more of a food and why.

I posted in the thread because I love both sports, and find it foolish to have to decide which one is better. This sort of thing always turns into people bashing baseball and saying it isn't a sport.

This topic has been debated to death on this site before. But the topic itself makes no sense. Why do you have to choose between the 2?

Every one of the major sports is duller than hockey. That's like saying every flashlight on earth is dimmer than the sun. It's pretty much a useless statement.

But as the other sports go, I just do not understand how anyone can watch football, especially NFL. Outside of soccer, NFL is the most boring thing in sports television.

I find baseball entertaining, but that is probably because I have played (and umpired) at a high level and have an extra appreciation for the intricacies and nuances of the game. For example, I love trying to predict what the pitcher is going to throw the next pitch(es). And often I can, because as a catcher your job is to call the pitches, so I have an excellent sense for what to throw, where and when.

In my mind, if you can't explain the infield fly rule and tell me what an "area play" is, then you're not a real baseball fan who truly appreciates the game.

Off topic but stuff like this really bugs me. Fans that proclaim who is and who is not real fans based on something like the infield fly rule make it difficult for fans to fall in love with the sport.

I've followed baseball since I was a young child and i don't know what an "area play" is. So I guess I'm not a real baseball fan eh?

Arrogant sports fans are one of the worst things about sport.

Yeah, I agree. I don't mind watching from time to time, but I couldn't tell you what an area play is either. I'd hate to get caught in a stadium where I'm expected to know as much as the 'real fan' sitting next to me.

Jiggy...this is an internet forum where people debate opinions. Just dismissing the opinion/thread because you happen to feel they are both good sports isn't the way to go. Also, not all of us have been here posting as long as you...maybe you should just let us newbies debate the topic and you can go ahead and ignore it?

But if you'll be happier to hear reasons why hockey is better than baseball, by all means...continue. Remember, this is Canada...so the outcome is likely to be very one sided. Maybe take this "debate" to a fan forum of a major league baseball team...see how they like that.

agreed. evman, we all know you've played some high level baseball, that's very cool. Proclaiming yourself as some sort of "better fan than everyone else" is not.

I love both sports, hockey is most certainly my first love. But baseball always reminds me of my late grandfather. We would watch games together when I was little. Dad brought me a Jays cap from a business trip they year the franchise started playing so I've been a fan ever since.

Yup, put me in the love both sports as well. A bit more partial to baseball, as I played it at a fairly high level, whereas I only played hockey for a handful of years. But I love them both!

No sport (even hockey) is really all that interesting until you invest some time and emotion in following a particular league and team. I used to think soccer was deadly boring (what is up with all these 0-0 games?), but once you learn about the history, the rivalries, the personalities, I think any sport played at the highest level can be entertaining. Except Nascar.

Ok, ok. Maybe the area play thing went a little too far.

But I stick to the infield fly rule statement. If you don't know that rule, then you don't have the appreciation (knowledge) for the game required to really enjoy watching the sport. You can still be a (real) fan, but it just means you're missing something.

By the way, an area play is where the infielder doesn't actually have to touch the bag to get an out, but just be in the "area". It is for the safety of the infielders.
