This is basically the story of Rudy, except the players of the Notre Dame team "voted" Rudy into the final game instead of the fans voting.

Would be a sweet movie. Who could play John Scott though? Bradley Cooper I think.

I maintain my hope that after this one-off that turned out really well in the end, the NHL does the right thing to adjust the ASG fan-voting system to prevent future ballot stuffing debacles.
Which is exactly what I was getting at when I said the frustration (whether it be at Scott himself or the situation that allowed him to attend) should be directed at the NHL for allowing the fans a blank cheque to choose any player.

I'm in agreement they need to correct their voting policy because any attempt to recreate that kind of story would surely fall flat.

Hopefully they can provide a list or criteria for selecting someone deserving (based on their play) that year.

I agree with the TSN poll. Leiv Schreiber would be perfect.

Ha. I didn't see that poll but Liev would be an excellent choice. Would be so perfect.

Not just the NHL. My frustration in this situation is definitely directed primarily at the fans who wildlife manipulated the system in a juvenile attempt to make a point—whatever it was. Sure, I agree: the NHL should have dealt with this long ago after the Rory Fitzpatrick fiasco, but that does not absolve the participating public of their part in it.

You're frustrated with internet trolls?

Just as an FYI, that's how they win.

The moment the NHL opened a poll with no restrictions, that should have been seen coming a mile away. There should be zero surprise that went down like it did with even the most minimal understanding of how the internets work.

That is up there with being frustrated with the nature of comments under newspaper articles and youtube videos. It's the sad reality of the world we live in.

The fact that the NHL tried to tone down the John Scott love-in by naming three candidates for the game's MVP award yesterday, only to have at least half of the NHL's own team Twitter accounts themselves also vote for Scott as a write-in had to sting a little.

The NHL should be better versed in this whole internet thing by now.

The sad reality does not do much to mitigate my frustration, as with a huge number of unavoidably frustrating aspects of the real world that we all deal with.

If they ever make a movie of this, I hope they cast Jay Baruchel as Gaudreau.

When a 6'8 guy with an engineering degree, marginal skill, and a fighter's cred gets to play in the all-star game with the league's ballerinas, it's the end of machismo apparently. Somehow.

I just heard on Fan 960 that someone has started a petition to have John Scott as the 2016 Calgary Stampede Parade Marshall! (edit - I see The Scorpion already highlighted this.)

But regarding the ASG weekend two guy I was impressed with were Brent Burns and Joe Pavelski. They really took Scott under their wing and made him feel welcome and on par with with all player attendees. Was cool to see.

That's mostly due to the fact they were teammates in San Jose

I don't think he is a very good representative of his 'breed.' There were much better enforcers that played the game.

Like Jiri, I didn't mind that he had fun, and you can obviously be happy for his family, but from a hockey perspective, Scott epitomizes a side of the NHL that I personally am glad is almost gone.

Its 2016. The big hurrah over tough guys and intimidating the other team by hurting players is lame. I for one am glad there is now room in the league for guys like Johnny Hockey and Kane. Their 'breed' of hockey is much more enjoyable to watch. Plus, after their career is over, they might even have a decent life to live void of suffering that so many professional athletes of days gone by go through because of the injuries they suffered playing in a league where nobody gave a damn if a guy was knocked out by a dirty hit.

But good on Scott for taking it all in stride. Maybe now he'll see a different face to the players before he mashes them in the head.
