3 on 3 is so much better to watch than 5 on 5. I think it will become a format in its own right, similar to rugby sevens or indoor soccer. The NHL-sized rink has simply been outgrown by the players.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Can 5v5 survive over the long term? In 10 years, I expect 5v5 to be competing with 3v3 for players and audiences. In 20 years I think 5v5 will be largely superceded by the wholly superior 3v3 format.

Why does soccer speed up when played on a smaller surface (futsal) compared to the traditional pitches?
Why do you think hockey will be "better" on a bigger surface? I'll warrant it won't be better, and all it will do is allow teams to hunker down defensively even more.

I've watched the league games on International ice. Not the all star tournaments or the world tournaments, but actual league games.
The trap becomes way more prevalent, teams don't aggressively attack, its not great hockey either. Coaches are really content to clog the middle of the ice, because the shots from the outside and the point are less dangerous.

I think the comparison to indoor soccer works. Another comparison would be street basketball. I could see 3 on 3 hockey becoming it's own sport much in the same way. Neither basketball or soccer have suffered in any way from those variation sports.
That's true. But the OP also went on record to suggest that within a fairly short period of time 3 v 3 would eventually supplant 5 v 5 in popularity to the extent that the NHL would need to accommodate it.
That will never happen, if for no other reason than that the NHLPA would never concede to decreasing its workforce by 30%.

Now to counter that, lets lift the nets up about 10 feet in the air, and to make it a big harder we could shrink the nets and tip them so they face up.
Lets make the puck go away and replace it with a ball the size of a human head. That way its easier for the fans to see it.
Lets get rid of the sticks, I mean that only makes scoring harder, and replace it with bouncing the ball.
There I fixed the NHL scoring problems.

3 on 3 should never replace regular season 5 on 5. Except the current use of it in OT is fantastic.
It is a non point anyways the NHLPA would fight it tooth and nail if the NHL ever even gave a nano thought about it for reg 5 on 5.
Throw away all future stats that would be for sure.
Rinks will become wider and not go to 3 on 3. A full season with only 3 on 3 hockey will not be entertaining, as others have said it's a great format for OT and the all star tournament, but as a 82 game season it will never be a thing.
As someone who has watched less than 5 football games ever, I say football should go 3 on 3. These O and D lines seem like roster bloat just designed to run into each other. QB, two receivers. On the defense, one guy who tries to take out the QB and two more guys who try to stop the receivers.
How many steamboats does the D line guy have to count?
It's okay for 5 minutes or a short period but I'm not convinced that three 20 minute periods of 3 on 3 would be as entertaining than 5 on 5 at the end of the day.
